We should mourn for all who have died because of militarism

I remember the first time I prayed for an enemy. It was just outside An Khe, a village in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. A helicopter gunship rocketed some North Vietnamese regulars who were about to attack us.

I prayed for those kids. My top sergeant berated me for my prayer. I realized then that my enemy was not the North Vietnamese, not the Viet Cong, but militarism.

As for the first sergeant, he was a good man who was simply unaware, unaware of the fact that loving an enemy means loving specific people, North Vietnamese in this case.

GOP elephant headed for same fate as woolly mamoth

"I dont want to see the Republican Party ride to political victory on the Four Horsemen of Calumny - Fear, Ignorance, Bigotry and Smear," said pioneering Maine Congresswoman Margaret Chase Smith. The GOP senator must be turning over in her grave at the current state of her beloved Republican Party.

Fear, ignorance, bigotry and smear seem to be the only ammunition left for a once-mighty political party that now seems to suffer from the mind-numbing malady of Obama Derangement Disease.

Once upon a time not so long ago, such Republican moderates as Sen. Smith were respectable voices for their party on Capitol Hill and across this nation. Moderate and liberal Republicans in the House and Senate helped to pass a 1964 Civil Rights Bill that was opposed by many Southern Democrats in Congress, including West Virginias Robert Byrd, Tennessees Albert Gore Sr. - father of former Vice President Gore - and Arkansas William Fulbright, who later became a leading opponent of the Vietnam War.
