Nick Caves Rejected Gladiator Sequel

41IINPstaoL._SL500_AA240_.jpgNovelist and musician Nick Cave wrote a sequel to Gladiator at the request of the first films lead, Russell Crowe. The studio turned down the draft.

According to the Guardian, fans uncovered a copy of the script, that includes Roman gods, time travel, early Christians, and ends with Crowes resurrected character fighting in World War II and Vietnam. Cave is the author of "And the Ass Saw the Angel" and the upcoming novel, "The Death of Bunny Munro."

Gladiators director, Ridley Scott, explained in the article: "Russell didnt want to let it go, obviously, because it worked very well. When I say worked very well, I dont refer to success. I mean, as a piece it works very well. Storytelling, [it] works brilliantly. I think [Cave] enjoyed doing it." (Via Ryan Chapman)

Afghans riot over air-strike atrocity

Witnesses say deaths of 147 people in three villages came after a sustained bombardment by American aircraft. Patrick Cockburn, in Herat, reports

A local official Abdul Basir Khan said yesterday that he had collected the names of 147 people who had died, making it the worst such incident since the US intervened in Afghanistan started in 2001. A phone call from the governor of Farah province, Rohul Amin, in which he said that 130 people had died, was played over the loudspeaker in the Afghan parliament in Kabul, sparking demands for more control over US operations.

Shouting "Death to America" and "Death to the Government", thousands of Afghan villagers hurled stones at police yesterday as they vented their fury at American air strikes that local officials claim killed 147 civilians.

Former Presidential Candidate Writes Testimonial for Convicted Child Pornographer

clippers remarks: "Sanders had argued that he deserved only probation, claiming that what the paper calls "his compulsion to research the world of child pornography" was "a symptom of his post-traumatic stress disorder that stemmed from his combat service"--that is, he was depraved on account of he was deployed."

Wade Sanders, who pleaded guilty in December to possession of child pornography, was sentenced Monday, and he got off relatively easy. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Judge Thomas Whelan sentenced Sanders to just 37 months in prison--barely a third of the 10-year maximum, and more than two years less than the 63 months prosecutors had asked for.

The Union-Tribune describes Sanders as a "war hero," but he is best known for his service to John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee. Kerrys central campaign claim was that he deserved to be president because his so-called band of brothers, veterans who had served alongside him on Navy Swift boats in Vietnam, vouched for his heroism and his impeccable character.
