WASHINGTON ? Colin Powell, a retired general whod often been mentioned as a Republican presidential candidate himself, endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president Sunday during the taping of NBCs "Meet the Press" television program.

Powell, who served as President George W. Bushs secretary of State during Bushs first term and made the case for an Iraq invasion before the United Nations, said Obama had shown that he had the "intellectual vigor" to be president.

Powell told reporters after he emerged from the Meet the Press taping that he had been impressed by the differences between the way Obama and Republican John McCain reacted to the building financial crisis. He also said he was troubled by McCains negative campaigning and the emphasis on Obamas ties to former Vietnam-era radical William Ayers.

McCain gets support from former secretaries of state

Henry Kissinger, retired Gen. Alexander Haig, Lawrence Eagleburger and George Shultz all said they would support McCain. The former heads of the State Department said the senator?s leadership skills, his record and his vision make him the right choice for president in difficult times.

?The world?s challenges are radically changing and our country needs John McCain?s experience and optimism,? said Kissinger, who served as secretary of state from 1973 to 1977 and won a Nobel Prize for his efforts to end the Vietnam War.
