War Hero or War Criminal?

clipped by: zasel
clippers remarks: This article is written by Robert Richter, who was the CBS political director during the 1960s. He writes compellingly about a controversial issue that is rarely spoken about. Whether or not fighter bombers in the Viet Nam war should be charged as war criminals, due to their flagrant disregard of the Geneva Conventions that prohibit bombing of civilian areas. As it turns out, a documentary on the subject was done by a general back in the day, and CBS refused to show it, because they felt it was too hot.

Now that Mr. McCain is running for president, he is holding up his position as a bombing pilot as heroic duty for which he should be honoured. But the facts have shown, that he and his colleagues, have killed many millions of Vietnamese civilians by their incessant bombing of civilian enclaves. If the tables were turned, and Vietnamese pilots were bombing civilian enclaves in the United States, when they were captured, as McCain was, they would have been tried as war criminals.
As character assassination attacks on Sen. Barack Obama have now taken over Sen. John McCains campaign, and because McCain cites his military experience as of prime importance, now is the time to focus closer attention on a facet of the Arizona Senators own character. This is related to his 23 combat missions for Operation Rolling Thunder - the Pentagons name for U.S. bombing of North Vietnam.

I will never forget how stunned I was when Gen. Telford Taylor, a chief U.S. prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials after World War Two, told me that he strongly supported the idea of trying the U.S. pilots captured in North Vietnam as war criminals - and that he would be proud to lead in their prosecution.

Why would anyone have wanted to prosecute McCain and the other captured pilots? Taylors argument was that their actions were in violation of the Geneva conventions that specifically forbid indiscriminate bombing that could cause incidental loss of civilian life or damage to civilian objects.

stoking the fury

clippers remarks: i like the closer in this article-the revelation that the palin family spent 13,000 of the tax payers money to go on religious retreats-then goes on to comment........no wonder she winks at us-
hmmm i never had any doubt as to why
Stoking the fury

Between traveling to various cities for my various jobs, I dont get to spend a lot of time in front of the tube. So I was relatively late to cotton on to the alarming and not-so-subtle change in atmosphere at the Republican presidential Klanvokations ? oops, rallies.

Then, two people I respect got my attention. One is a remarkable man, a U.S. Air Force colonel, now retired, named Colin Chauret. He lives in Texas, and is a renowned fighter pilot who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

You might think with that pedigree, Chauret would be a Dubya supporter all the way. Think again: This fighter pilot really does have the eyes of an eagle. He is an authentic American patriot who didnt think he dropped his right to think when he earned his wings. For years, he has been arguing that the Shrub needed to be impeached. But George W. Bush will be a toxic remembrance in a little over three months, and now the colonel is angry about something else.

Heroin Addiction

clipped by: jimmy123
clippers remarks: Heroin addiction is one of the most destructive and painful addictions in the world. Produced from the poppy, heroin transfers a semi synthetic form of morphine, usually by way of injection. Administration of heroin gives the user euphoric feelings, which differ depending on the area that the heroin is injected. If the heroin is injected intravenously effects are felt within 7 to 8 seconds. Muscular injections are slower with full effects being felt at 5 to 8 minutes.

Heroin addiction has been regarded as rapidly increasing in the North America, giving rise to alarm amongst the authorities and health professionals. The largest producers of heroin are Afghanistan, Pakistan, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Mexico, and Columbia.

The rising epidemic of heroin addiction cuts across class and race lines, making it harder to contain. The joy during the use of the drug and the painful feelings during withdrawal from heroin add to the rate of increase addiction versus successful addiction recovery numbers. Heroin addiction remains one of the most complex and frustrating substance addictions in the world. Despite the upward battle in prevention and recovery, there are some positive gains in terms of awareness made towards thwarting heroin addiction.

McCain was not tortured, PoW guard claims

The Republican US presidential candidate John McCain was not tortured during his captivity in North Vietnam, the chief prison guard of the jail in which he was held has claimed.

In an interview with the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Nguyen Tien Tran acknowledged that conditions in the prison were "tough, though not inhuman". But, he added: "We never tortured McCain. On the contrary, we saved his life, curing him with extremely valuable medicines that at times were not available to our own wounded."

Tran, now 75, said McCain reached Hanoi with the worst injuries he had seen in a downed pilot. But he denied torturing him, saying it was his mission to ensure that McCain survived. As the son of the US naval commander in Vietnam, he offered a potential valuable propaganda weapon.

Tran told Corriere that McCain was sent to hospital the day after he was brought to Hanoi and stayed there for a month. "I never lost him from sight. I was frightened a doctor or nurse might do him harm."

A Single Woman

clipped by: debbyski
Clip Source: www.opednews.com

A Single Woman brings to life the adventures of Jeannette Rankin (R-MT), the world?s first female Congresswoman who also co-founded the American Civil Liberties Union.

Rankin was a suffragist, and peace activist, inspired by Gandhi. Elected to Congress twice, with over two decades between her terms, she was the only Congressperson to vote against both World Wars. A lifelong advocate for peace, she led a campaign against the Vietnam War in 1968, when she was 87 years old.

The film is a timely and provocative look at a true American maverick and reformer. Although Rankin changed the American political landscape forever, her life and works have been relatively unknown ? until now.

More reasons not to trust McCain on Ayers

There is reason to be skeptical about McCains depiction of Ayers nowadays. Despite McCains misquotation, did not say after 9/11 that he wished he had bombed more. He said he wished that the underground had done more to stop the Vietnam War, and he avers that he meant political action, not bombings. Ayers never was involved in killing anyone, contrary to the impression given by calling him a terrorist, and erasing from the record all the regrets he has expressed about his involvement in violence. McCain also does not mention that charges were dropped against Ayers because the government itself engaged in misconduct with the COINTELPRO program.. Ayers is now a respected professor of education who has been honored by and served on committees with prominent Republicans.
