Did Weapons Fail U.S. Troops During Afghanistan Assault?

clipped by: lakotahope
clippers remarks: U.S. troops had this problems when they were transitioning to the M16 from the M14 rifle. One U.S. soldier I met after Vietnam (he was paralyzed by a mortar), said he wanted to keep the M14. M14 was good, it had a better knock down component than the lighter .222 of the M16. M16s problems were finally ironed out--mostly. Still is this our problem today also? We need more troops if we are sending in minimal forces to engage the enemy. But, do we end up like the Russians?

WASHINGTON ?  In the chaos of an early morning assault on a remote U.S. outpost in eastern Afghanistan, Staff Sgt. Erich Phillips M4 carbine quit firing as militant forces surrounded the base. The machine gun he grabbed after tossing the rifle aside didnt work either.

When the battle in the small village of Wanat ended, nine U.S. soldiers lay dead and 27 more were wounded. A detailed study of the attack by a military historian found that weapons failed repeatedly at a "critical moment" during the firefight on July 13, 2008, putting the outnumbered American troops at risk of being overrun by nearly 200 insurgents.

A week ago, eight U.S. troops were killed at a base near Kamdesh, a town near Wanat. Theres no immediate evidence of weapons failures at Kamdesh, but the circumstances were eerily similar to the Wanat battle: insurgents stormed an isolated stronghold manned by American forces stretched thin by the demands of war.

Afghan outlook bleak as Taliban grabs territory

clipped by: jatfla
clippers remarks: While Obama plans his Peace Prize speech, our declared enemy is defeating our military for lack of commitment by their Commander-in-Chief. This is a travesty. The Taliban will, again, make Afghanistan its launching site for terror attacks against the West, enslave its population, and the soldiers who gave their lives there will have done it for nothing. All because of a lack of will.

Well Ms Michelle says that she is now proud of America....I couldnt be more ashamed of her husbands treachery and abandonment. This is aiding our enemies and undermining the American soldier. Shame! This is Vietnam times TEN.

Afghan outlook bleak as Taliban grabs territory

As generals, politicians and pundits in Washington debate the next best step for Americas eight-year war in Afghanistan, the Taliban takes new territory by the day, despite the record 64,000 U.S. troops here.

I leave after three years as the chief correspondent for The Associated Press, and never have things seemed so ominous. As one of Americas top military analysts, Anthony Cordesman, says: The U.S. "is now decisively losing."

No one thinks Kabul will fall while American forces are here. But even top U.S. commander Gen. Stanley McChrystals latest assessment says that without reversing insurgent momentum in the next 12 months, defeating the insurgency will no longer be possible.

Villagers fear thieving police more than militants, and the August presidential election laid bare how pervasive corruption is here. The Taliban is playing to the general disgust with corruption by offering itself as an alternative.
