The Brainy Bunch by Thomas Sowell

clippers remarks: based on those beliefs and hatreds.

Starting from a position of Germanys military weakness in the early 1930s, Hitler not only built up Germanys war-making potential, he did so in ways that minimized the danger that his potential victims would match his military build-up with their own. He said whatever soothing words they wanted to hear that would spare them the cost of military deterrence and the pain of contemplating another war.

He played some of the most highly educated people of his time for fools-- not only foreign political leaders but also members of the intelligentsia. The editor of The Times of London filtered out reports that his own foreign correspondents in Germany sent him about the evils and dangers of the Nazis. In the United States, W.E.B. Du Bois-- with a Ph.D. from Harvard-- said that dictatorship in Germany was "absolutely necessary to get the state in order."

In an age when facts seem to carry less weight than the visions of

Many people, including some conservatives, have been very impressed with how brainy the president and his advisers are.

It was, after all, Franklin D. Roosevelts brilliant "brains trust" advisers whose policies are now increasingly recognized as having prolonged the Great Depression of the 1930s, while claiming credit for ending it

Brainy folks were also present in Lyndon Johnsons administration, especially in the Pentagon, where Secretary of Defense Robert McNamaras brilliant "whiz kids" tried to micro-manage the Vietnam war, with disastrous results.

Many crucial things in life are learned from experience, rather than from clever thoughts or clever words. Indeed, a gift for the clever phrasing so much admired by the media can be a fatal talent, especially for someone chosen to lead a government.

Adolf Hitler was brilliant. His underlying beliefs may have been half-baked and his hatreds overwhelming, but he was a genius when it came to carrying out his plans politically,

The Afghanistan Report by By Ikram Sehgal

Alternatively, they can often change sides and provide tacit or real support to the insurgents. Communities make deliberate choices to resist, support or allow insurgent influence. The reasons for these choices must be better understood."

The report addresses corruption and abuse of power but it does not give it the primary weightage it should. Karzai and his lot should not remain in power even a day. Abdullah would probably be worse. In the eight years since the Taliban were deposed in November 2001, "criminality has contributed to a pervasive sense of insecurity among the people. Extensive smuggling diverts major revenues from the government and increases its susceptibility to insurgent penetration.

The huge difference between Vietnam and Afghanistan with respect to terrain and ideological motivation notwithstanding, the basic theme of the insurrection remains the same -- an armed struggle against a weak and corrupt government propped up by foreign troops. The far more pragmatic Stanley McChrystal, with years of combat experience in special operations, is many cuts professionally above Westmoreland.

"The fight is not an annual cyclical campaign of kinetics driven by an insurgent "fighting season." Rather, it is a year-round struggle, often conducted with little apparent violence, to win the support of the people.

Second, and more importantly, we face both a short and long-term fight. The long-term fight will require patience and commitment, the short-term fight will be decisive," said McChrystal.

The people of Afghanistan represent many things in this conflict -- an audience, an actor, and a source of leverage -- but above all, they are the objective.
