Want 7 More Years of War in Afghanistan?

clipped by: nedhamson1
clippers remarks: Maybe its the wrong question. How about this one? Will Pakistan be comfortable with a strongly independent and united Afghanistan without a guarantee that it would not threaten their northern border? Is there such a promise on the table? Nope. What about the other neighbors of Afghanistan? Dont they have the same concerns? Yes. Whats on the table for them? Nada.

If you agree that the Afghanistan problem needs new thinking, then maybe you ought to say so before we have something noone wants or will support.

people are still dying and suffering in a devastated Iraq, more US troops are being sent to war in Afghanistan, and billions of dollars are spent on both wars while social services are slashed at home during the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

China has a one-child policy due to a population of 1.3 billion people. What isn?t well known is that the one child policy applies only to the Han majority. That policy does not apply to the hundred million people that belong to the fifty-six minority groups in China. That means Tibetans

U.S. college recruiters find growing market overseas, in Vietnam

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam ? Besides the brochures, application forms and give-away trinkets spread on the table in front of her, Claudia Colnar keeps a U.S. map handy. Inevitably, "Wheres Wyoming?" is the first question shell get when recruiting Vietnamese students to her community college.

Her response goes beyond geography. Wyoming is home to American Indian tribes, national parks and snow, she says. She tells parents that Sheridan College, her campus, is in a safe, rural environment.

Colnars trip last year, her first to Vietnam, yielded no enrollments. This week, shes trying again. "Wed be remiss if we didnt," she says.

At the New World Hotel, 700 students and their parents poured into a fancy ballroom to learn about 23 U.S. schools participating in last years Asian recruitment tour organized by the American Association of Community Colleges.

Fresh hope for endangered primates

clipped by: JICWyllie
New Asian reserves could save species with just 300 individuals in the wild

Two of the worlds rarest primates, the cao vit gibbon and the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey, now have a more secure future after the creation of safe havens for them in China and Vietnam.

Once thought extinct, both species are now on the critically endangered list, with just 110 cao vit gibbons and about 200 Tonkin snub nosed monkeys left in the world, and it is hoped the new forest reserves will increase their chances of survival.

The British wildlife charity Fauna and Flora International (FFI), which works for wildlife protection in developing countries, was instrumental in setting up the new protected areas, which house the gibbons only known population, and the most viable population of the monkey.

The new 2,000-hectare reserve also supports a relatively pristine sub-tropical forest with a wide range of other wildlife
