Clipmarks | Vietnam ClipsWikiLeaks Founder Breaks Cover, But Avoids USclipped by: saharaclippers remarks: In April WikiLeaks released the Baghdad video, prompting considerable criticism of the Pentagon. The film was edited and produced in Iceland where Assange spends a lot of his time and which last week prepared the most radical and liberal freedom of information legislation anywhere in the world. Birgitta Jonsdottir, an Iceland MP and anti-war activist who led the drive for the new laws, co-produced the WikiLeaks version of the Baghdad video. "I worked on it 18 hours a day through the Easter holidays," she said. Jonsdottir, a close associate of Assange, said the WikiLeaks founder "went into hiding when the story of Mannings arrest was published". The elusive founder of WikiLeaks, who is at the centre of a potential US national security sensation, has surfaced from almost a month in hiding to tell the Guardian he does not fear for his safety but is on permanent alert. Julian Assange, a renowned Australian hacker who founded the electronic whistleblowers platform WikiLeaks, vanished when a young US intelligence analyst in Baghdad was arrested. The analyst, Bradley Manning, had bragged he had sent 260,000 incendiary US state department cables on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to WikiLeaks. Assange appeared in public in Brussels for the first time in almost a month to speak at a seminar on freedom of information at the European parliament. Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the Pentagon Papers ? a top secret study about the Vietnam war ? in 1973, spoke to the Daily Beast. He said: "I would think that [Assange] is in some danger. Granted, I would think that his notoriety now would provide him some degree of protection." Blogging behind Vietnams bamboo cyberwallclipped by: finn_gclippers remarks: See the CNN video at website! Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (CNN) -- Helmet under her arm, Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quyn arrives after traveling 450 kilometers by motorbike, evading the security police, to tell CNN the story of her imprisonment for blogging in Vietnam. "The first three days I was scared for myself," she said about her 10 days in prison, during which officers repeatedly asked her about her writing and if she received cash from anti-government groups outside the country. Her blog includes writings about her daily life and pictures of her young daughter, but she also expresses her outspoken views against Chinas intervention in her country When I first got in touch with Nguyen nearly a year later, her phone and movements were still being monitored. E-mail, I had been told, was the best way to get in touch. "I am willing to tell my story to you," she wrote to me, saying she would travel from Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh City to meet us. Why the Taliban is winning in Afghanistan As Washington and London struggle to prop up a puppet government over which Hamid Karzai has no control, they risk repeating the blood-soaked 19th-century history of Britain?s imperial defeat. In 1843, shortly after his return from Afghanistan, an army chaplain, Reverend G R Gleig, wrote a memoir about the First Anglo-Afghan War, of which he was one of the very few survivors. It was, he wrote, "a war begun for no wise purpose, carried on with a strange mixture of rashness and timidity, brought to a close after suffering and disaster, without much glory attached either to the government which directed, or the great body of troops which waged it. Not one benefit, political or military, has Britain acquired with this war. Our eventual evacuation of the country resembled the retreat of an army defeated." Dana Stone and Sean Flynn, riding motorcycles into Communist-held territory in Cambodia on April 6, 1970 Just 40 years ago, the missing men had headed down an empty road with their cameras in search of Khmer Rouge guerrillas. They were never heard from again. ?I don?t like the idea of his spirit out there tormented,? Mr. Page said, a wandering ghost that could only find rest, as many in Asia believe, after proper funeral rites. ?There?s something spooky about being M.I.A.? Cambodia was a particularly dangerous place for foreign journalists during five years of war before the Khmer Rouge victory in 1975. At least 37 died or disappeared, including 15, along with Mr. Flynn, in a six-week period in April 1970. Coffee : What You Can Do To Lessen Its Impact On The Environmentclipped by: lou_belleClip Source: bestcoffeemakersguide.com Oil aside, coffee is the most highly traded commodity in the world. The global demand for it stretches from coffee houses in Sydney, to cafe?s in Italy, to street stalls in Vietnam. Unsurprisingly, all of this coffee consumption takes a heavy toll on the environment. Most of us do not consider the deforestation caused by coffee farming, the huge amount of water consumption, and the mountains of paper products (filters, cups, etc.) we create as a by-product of our coffee habit. If you want to drink coffee (relatively) guilt free, here are some ways to make your coffee habit more environmentally friendly: Für die Inhalte dieses Feeds ist alleine der jeweilige Autor/Anbieter verantwortlich. Youd better keep your head down Mr Assange, youre a marked man. Its not *healthy* to upset the war-mongering American Empire. Dont forget, that the US prez has granted himself powers to be the judge, jury and executioner of any person on the face of the planet, who he sees fit. Gods speed, Mr Assange. Daniel Ellsberg: Wikileaks Founder Would Do Well To Keep His Whereabouts Unknown (VIDEO) Speaking on Obamas record-setting pace of prosecuting whistleblowers, Ellsberg said, [..] he sees an "immediate parallel" between the Vietnam-era suppression of negative information about the war and the current U.S. restrictions on news coming out of the Middle East. Clip Source: rawstory.com The whistleblower website that posted video of a US Army helicopter firing on unarmed civilians and killing two Reuters employees is ready to do it again, its founder says. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange says he has obtained video of a US "massacre" that took place in Afghanistan in 2009. "The clip will show previously classified footage from US warplanes that had been tapped to bomb Taliban positions in Farah province, Afghanistan last year," the paper said. "The Afghan government said at the time that the strikes by F-18 and B1 planes near Garani killed 147 civilians. An independent Afghan inquiry later put the toll at 86." Assange writes that ?we are still working on? preparations for release of the video of ?the Garani massacre.? American officials have acknowledged in the past that they are concerned about the release of the Garani video, fearing that it could undermine public support for the American military campaign in Afghanistan Taking A Human Toll Tooclipped by: debbyskiClip Source: www.nytimes.com NEW ORLEANS ? On a normal night, Hong Le, a deckhand on a fishing boat, would be miles out on the water laying nets and lines to catch tuna. Instead, he lies awake in his rented room agonizing over the money he is not sending to his wife and children in Vietnam and the delay in his longtime dream of bringing them here, apparently dashed by the oil spill. At each day passes, Mr. Le, 58, says he feels more hopeless. ?I just wait at home,? he said hollowly through an interpreter. Beyond the environmental and economic damage, the toll of the mammoth spill in the Gulf of Mexico is being measured in hopelessness, anxiety, stress, anger, depression and even suicidal thoughts among those most affected, social workers say. Catholic Charities reported this week that of the 9,800 people the counselors had approached since May 1 in Orleans, St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes, 1,593 were referred for counseling because of signs of depression. For a country with such brilliant people why are your politicians so intellectually challenged? As Johan Galtung states, " The United States is becoming irrelevant". Clip Source: www.democracynow.org We turn now to the second part of my interview with Johan Galtung. Known as a founder of the field of peace and conflict studies, hes spent the past half-century pursuing nonviolent conflict resolution in international relations. His latest book is The Fall of the US Empire ? And Then What?: Successors, Regionalization or Globalization? US Fascism or US Blossoming? I spoke to him last week about his prediction of the collapse of US empire in ten years, by 2020. In this second part of our interview, Galtung discusses his assessment of President Obama, the US corporate media and more. But we began with the war in Afghanistan, where he has worked extensively in attempts at conflict resolution. Some in the Gulf do-something chorus are the same people who doubted that the U.S. military could succeed in Iraq or Afghanistan. But the U.S. military is surely the most competent instrument of government. Any senior officer, from David Petraeus on down, will tell you that bringing the U.S. military to this level of competence in the years after Vietnam was a heavy lift. To get the rest of government to the militarys disciplined competence wont happen?unless governments responsibilities become smaller and more manageable. Instead, it all keeps getting bigger and more error-prone. Exhibit A: Chris Dodds massive and complex financial re-regulation bill. So they have to find a suitable and safe habitat to release the young ones. Clip Source: news.yahoo.com PHNOM PENH, Cambodia ? Conservationists in Cambodia are celebrating the hatching of a clutch of eggs from one of the worlds most critically endangered animals, the Siamese crocodile. Thirteen infants crawled out of their shells over the weekend in a remote part of the Cardamom Mountains in southwestern Cambodia, following a weekslong vigil by researchers who found them in the jungle. Experts believe as few as 250 Siamese crocodiles are left in the wild, almost all of them in Cambodia but with a few spread between Laos, Myanmar, Indonesia, Vietnam and possibly Thailand. The operation to protect and hatch the eggs was mounted by United Kingdom-based Fauna and Flora International, for whom conservation of this once-abundant species is a key program. "Every nest counts," program manager Adam Starr told Associated Press Television News. "To be able to find a nest is a very big success story, to be able to hatch eggs properly is an even bigger success story." Perhaps India, Thailand and Vietnam should institute Hindi, Thai and Vietnamese language tests for the thousands of Anglo men who travel to their countries in search of sex and/or wives.
