The United States, with 500,000 soldiers, couldn?t prevail in Vietnam, a country of 67,000 square miles and 19 million people. Afghanistan has half again that population and 250,000 square miles of some of the planet?s most unforgiving terrain. As Brigadier General Mark Carleton-Smith, Britain?s top military officer in Afghanistan, bluntly told the Sunday Times, "We?re not going to win this war."
