10 Things Conservatives Dont Want You to Know About Reagan

1. Reagan was a serial tax raiser.

2. Reagan nearly tripled the federal budget deficit.

3. Unemployment soared after Reagan?s 1981 tax cuts.

4. Reagan grew the size of the federal government tremendously. Reagan promised ?to move boldly, decisively, and quickly to control the runaway growth of federal spending,? but federal spending ?ballooned? under Reagan. He bailed out Social Security in 1983 after attempting to privatize it, and set up a progressive taxation system to keep it funded into the future. He promised to cut government agencies like the Department of Energy and Education but ended up adding one of the largest ? the Department of Veterans? Affairs, which today has a budget of nearly $90 billion and close to 300,000 employees. He also hiked defense spending by over $100 billion a year to a level not seen since the height of the Vietnam war.

What the right wont admit about Reagan

clipped by: ratilfar
clippers remarks: To an America still nursing a Woodstock, Kent State, Vietnam and Watergate hangover, Reagans performance was reassuring. Although his personal coolness was notorious -- aides wondered if he knew their names, and even his children complained that he treated them like strangers -- the character Reagan played in the Oval Office was hard to dislike.

Thats not to say Reagan did no harm. George W. Bushs epic failures came about largely because, unlike Reagan, whose fealty to right-wing ideology was at best inconsistent, he put dogmatic "Reaganism" into action.

Rush Limbaugh

Nothing better symbolized Ronald Reagans 100th birthday celebration than that it should fall on Super Bowl Sunday, with Air Force jets roaring unseen over a hermetically sealed stadium, almost, but not quite, drowning out a tarted-up former Mouseketeer who mangled the lyrics of the Star-Spangled Banner.

Playing the president, Reagan essentially recapitulated the Robert Young role in "Father Knows Best" -- firm but fair, and unfailingly optimistic. True, Reagan had a disconcerting habit of conflating film scripts with reality: talking feelingly, for example, of his experiences liberating Nazi death camps at the end of World War II, which never happened.

Captain Reagan of the First Motion Picture Unit served in California for the duration of the war. But he got away with exaggerating, biographer Edmund Morris believes, because hed spent weeks editing raw film footage from Buchenwald. His emotional reaction was sincere.

my little brother, of whom i am well pleased

clipped by: flinta
clippers remarks: its always with deep affection i call him my little brother, though both of us are grey and thinning on top. he weeps for the victims of political chicanery, is driven by deep-seated compassion and fury as he faithfully chronicles the named canadians and the unnamed civilian legions of middle east war dead. a sacred duty, he stands vigil. i love you, brother.

The realities of resisting war

Media Credit: Tobey Anderson

After finishing his time at the University of Iowa in the United States, Tobey Anderson was drafted by the military and reported to Fort Louis, WA. He completed his training and was ranked high among his peers. But, when the day came that his unit was asked to report to Oakland, CA for deployment to Vietnam, he resisted.

Anderson was a proud American citizen back then, and would have jumped at the opportunity to defend his country, but when the opportunity arose as a controversial war in which the USs involvement was frequently debated - criticized as the US meddling in a regional conflict - Andersons sense of duty was replaced by confusion. He did not want to fight in a war he didnt believe in.

In 1969, knowing he would soon be out of time, Anderson jumped on a bus, crossed the American-Canadian border in Detroit, MI, continuing onto Toronto, ON and eventually Kingston, ON to stay with a friend.
