Gorbachev: Nato victory in Afghanistan impossible

He said before the Soviet Union withdrew from Afghanistan, an agreement had been reached with Iran, India, Pakistan and the US.

"We had hoped America would abide by the agreement that we reached that Afghanistan should be a neutral, democratic country, that would have good relations with its neighbours and with both the US and the USSR.

The former leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, has warned Nato that victory in Afghanistan is impossible

Mr Gorbachev said that the US had no alternative but to withdraw its forces if it wanted to avoid another Vietnam

He praised President Barack Obama for his decision to begin withdrawing troops next year, but said the US would struggle to get out of the situation

Obstructionism Reaps its Rewards

clipped by: merrie
clippers remarks: In 1966, the nation was reacting viscerally to the stalemate in Vietnam, rising casualties, campus disorders, soaring crime and riots in Harlem and Watts, all seen as the legacy of LBJs Great Society.

In 1994, it was gays in the military, Hillarycare and the public perception that Bill Clinton was more liberal than he had let on that cost Democrats both houses. The post-election spin that the nation had rallied to Newt Gingrichs "Contract with America" was pure propaganda.

Tuesdays election, too, will be no embrace of the GOP, but rather a repudiation of what Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have come to represent. All are seen as power-hungry politicians of an out-of-touch regime that is seizing control of private wealth and private lives as it fails in its duty to win our wars, balance our budgets and secure our borders.

On Tuesday, the nation, including millions of Obama voters, will come out to empower the Party of No, even as the nation voted in 2006 and 2008 ...

The polls and pundits are all in alignment now.

The Republican Party is headed for a victory Tuesday to rival the biggest and best of those that the party has known in the lifetime of most Americans.

In 1938, the GOP won 72 seats in the House.

In 1946, Republicans swept both houses and presented Harry Truman with a "fighting 80th Congress" that contained three future presidents: John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon.

In 1966, Republicans picked up 47 House seats to set up the comeback of Nixon, who had led the party out of the wilderness of Goldwaters defeat.

In 1994, the Republican Revolution added 52 House seats and captured both chambers for the first time since Eisenhowers first term.

Here we go again: Writer disinvited from convention for voicing her opinion re: Ground Zero Mosque

Elizabeth Moon is a pretty extraordinary woman. She made the decision to join the Marine Corps as an officer during the Vietnam War, at a time many men were unwilling to. She is the child of a single parent, and an utterly self-made woman with multiple college degrees. She is also the mother of an autistic child and has done some pretty impressive advocating for disabled children. She writes  some great Military Science Fiction books, with strong female characters-because she knows from experience that women can be a lot of pretty amazing things. Moon exemplifies in many ways what I think of as feminism-that any woman can and should have the ability to be whatever she wants to be, from serving her country to being a mother-tigress.

To this end, she was chosen as a Guest of Honor at Wiscon, a feminist science fiction convention.

All was well?until, on her own personal blog, she made a 9/11 post about the proposed Islamic Center in NYC, and overall, about immigrant assimilation in America.

Reagan Appointed Fed Judge Nailed for Drugs, Guns, & Sex

Clip Source: www.google.com
A 67-year-old federal judges wild relationship with a stripper started with a lap dance, prosecutors said, and quickly escalated into escapades of prostitution and gun-toting drug deals for cocaine and prescription pills.

Senior Judge Jack T. Camp, a veteran jurist who had achieved a status that allowed him a lighter caseload, now finds himself in a peculiar position, in front of one of his peers, and with lawyers combing through his decisions, wondering whether they have grounds to challenge them.

"I dont know whether the allegations are true or whether they infected the decision making, but its incumbent upon me to raise these issues," said Gerry Weber, a civil rights attorney who is readying an appeal in a case that Camp ruled on in June.

Camp, a Vietnam War veteran who was appointed by Ronald Reagan, built a reputation for handing out stiff sentences, including for drug convictions. He could face years behind bars on drug and gun charges.

American support for the war in Afghanistan has never been lower

clipped by: Steve Savage
clippers remarks: But for all the investment of lives and money, the war is not registering with Americans. At least not while the numbers in everyones bank accounts are a preoccupation. In a September poll by CNN and Opinion Research, only 9% of respondents thought the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were the most important problem facing the country, 49% thought the economy mattered most.
What the numbers say about progress in Afghanistan

Washington (CNN) ? American support for the war in Afghanistan has never been lower, according to the latest CNN polling. The low numbers just the latest figure in the complex math being calculated to determine how the US should proceed in the ten year war.

The latest poll from CNN and Opinion Research Corporation found only 37% of all Americans favor the war, 52% say the war in Afghanistan has turned into a Vietnam.

Those numbers are going down as US commitment to the war is going up, significantly. 30,000 more troops added this year. At the time the troop increase was announced, military leaders were aware it would mean a rise in troop casualties and were vocal in trying to warn Americans that it would happen.

Still the daily headlines about troop deaths is staggering. 16 NATO troops have been killed in the last three days. The US has lost 386 troops so far this year.

U.S. Alarmed by Harsh Tone of China?s Military

clipped by: tabsey
clippers remarks: The Pentagon is worried that its increasingly tense relationship with the Chinese military owes itself in part to the rising leaders of Commander Cao?s generation, who, much more than the country?s military elders, view the United States as the enemy. Older Chinese officers remember a time, before the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 set relations back, when American and Chinese forces made common cause against the Soviet Union.
BEIJING ? Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates met his Chinese counterpart, Liang Guanglie, in Vietnam on Monday for the first time since the two militaries suspended talks with each other last winter, calling for the two countries to prevent ?mistrust, miscalculations and mistakes.?

His message seemed directed mainly at officers like Lt. Cmdr. Tony Cao of the Chinese Navy.

Days before Mr. Gates arrived in Asia, Commander Cao was aboard a frigate in the Yellow Sea, conducting China?s first war games with the Australian Navy, exercises to which, he noted pointedly, the Americans were not invited.

Nor are they likely to be, he told Australian journalists in slightly bent English, until ?the United States stops selling the weapons to Taiwan and stopping spying us with the air or the surface.?

Noted for its strength in rebounding from Hurricane Katrina, the Vietnamese community in the Gulf is now suffering from emotional and economic stresses. The closing of fishing areas and the projected long-term damage to fisheries have caused many to worry. Many Vietnamese in these communities have fished for several generations, and the thought of job searching without proper English language skills makes the future seem bleak.

Organizations such as Mary Queen of Vietnam Community Development Corporation and Boat People SOS, Gulf Coast chapter, have come to the aid of Vietnamese communities by providing emergency funds. Mary Queen of Vietnam has also collaborated with Catholic Charities to provide mental health counseling for those in need. Boat People SOS has offered free legal counseling to those residents who have been offered contracts and other forms of compensation from BP.

LIUSA: Were on your side; Monahan Brothers Citizens United walk across the U.S.

Related... If you didnt hear my interview on last nights Mike Malloy Show with 70-year old Laird Monahan who, with his 67-year old brother are currently walking across the U.S. in order to highlight the Supreme Courts horrific Citizens United decision, unleashing unfettered, undisclosed (and often, even un-American) corporate money into U.S. elections, Id highly recommend giving it a listen.

The Monahan Brothers, both Vietnam vets coincidentally, are American Heroes in my estimation, and their story should be told on not just every progressive media outlet in the nation, but more importantly, on the corporate mainstream media outlets who dont seem to want to offer much coverage to this story for some reason, as Laird and I discussed last night.

Fraudster who posed as a decorated U.S. Marine

clipped by: foxyarse
clippers remarks: Former Marine and FBI agent Dan Ryan smelled a rat when he first came in contact with Rodriguez at a Republican committee meeting two years ago.

He noticed he was wearing a service uniform with some of the military branchs highest honours, including the Navy Cross. The Navy Cross is the second highest award for Marines and sailors.

Mr Ryan said: My first reaction was, "This guys a stud!" Then I looked a little more and thought, "Somethings going on here." Im very, very sensitive about the Navy Cross. I happen to have written one of the citations for the Marine who was killed right next to me in 1967 in Vietnam in a firefight.

Suspecting that something was not right, Mr Ryan decided to check up on Rodriguezs background. After doing some research, he alerted investigators at the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

A man who posed as a highly decorated U.S. Marine was jailed yesterday for seven-and-a-half years.

John Rodriguez, from Scottsdale in Arizona, was convicted in Maricopa Country Superior Court of forgery, fraudulent schemes and presentation of a false instrument for filing.

The court heard how for five years, between 2005 and 2010, the 31-year-old falsely posed as a Marine honoured with a variety of prestigious medals.

Rodriguez gained access to military bases, including Camp Pendleton in San Diego, received discounted airline tickets, went to the Marine Corps Ball and briefly acquired a job with a local health-care provider that gave him access to sensitive information on veterans.

In addition he signed documents claiming to be on active duty and listed military status when he tried to gain employment.

Gillard pressed on extra resources for troops

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has been questioned about extra resources for Australian troops while on a surprise visit to Afghanistan.

Julia Gillard visits troops in Afghanistan

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston during their visit to Tarin Kowt. (Department of Defence)

While mingling with the soldiers, she was asked if she was planning to send more troops and equipment.

Troop numbers in Afghanistan have become a major issue in recent weeks following the publication of an email from a frontline soldier who argues Australian forces are under-resourced.

"If we get further advice you need stuff, well certainly respond to it," she said.

Ms Gillard also visited Kabul to meet with the Afghan president Hamid Karzai.

Ms Gillard will spend three days in Brussels attending the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), a gathering of 16 Asian leaders and the 27 members of the European Union.

She will become the first Australian Prime Minister to have attended the meeting.

Mixed messages from Obama, Petraeus on Afghanistan pullout

clipped by: tabsey
clippers remarks: A clip recently presented the Pentagon as the all powerful ones. This situation will need to be a win for Obama.

President Obama has called for an Afghanistan exit strategy with no wiggle room and a July 2011 troop withdrawal. General David Petraeus, commander of US forces in Afghanistan, has been less firm on the date.

Even as new disclosures reveal that President Obama was leaning hard on the Pentagon to come up with an exit strategy for Afghanistan with no ?wiggle room,? US troops on the ground are increasingly seeking out just that

soldiers tend to point to the directives of their commander in Afghanistan, Gen. David Petraeus, rather than their commander-in-chief, on the topic of a July, 2011

This deadline was one that

the president felt compelled to put in place in a classified six-page ?terms sheet? ? the result of his reported growing frustration at being boxed in by the Pentagon?s push for more US troops in Afghanistan. It came, too, on the heels of Vice President Joe Biden?s warnings that a large escalation would mean America would be ?locked into Vietnam.?

Early 1900s In Colour

clipped by: JackieDel
Clip Source: citynoise.org

Autochrome was the first industrial process for true colour photography. When the Lumière brothers launched it commercially in June 1907, it was a photograhic revolution - black and white came to life in colour. Autochromes consist of fine layers of microscopic grains of potato starch dyed either red-orange, green or violet blue combined with black carbon particles, spread over a glass plate where it is combined with a black and white photographic emulsion. All colours can be reproduced from three primary colours.

The Worlds Scariest Bridges

clipped by: leezabet
clippers remarks: All bridges serve a purpose, whether utilitarian or inspirational. And some of them add a distinct element of fear. But you dont have to be in a remote part of the world: scary bridges exist everywhere, in all shapes, sizes, and heights. And crossing over them can be the ultimate in adventure travel.

Many courageous (or foolhardy) travelers seek out hair-raising bridges just for the thrill. The bridges along the route to Colombias National Archaeological Park of Tierradentro are a good example. Though there are safer routes via bus from La Plata, some thrill-seekers choose to ride motorcycles over slippery bamboo crossings deep in the mountains, where one wrong move could mean plunging into a turbulent river.

So get ready to face your fears -- or maybe find your next adventure -- with our list of the worlds most petrifying bridges.
