Then, there?s history.  In the present drone wars, as in the CIA?s bloody Phoenix Program in the Vietnam era, the Agency?s operatives, working in distinctly alien terrain, must rely on local sources (or possibly official Pakistani ones) for targeting intelligence.  In Vietnam in the 1960s, the Agency?s Phoenix Program -- reportedly responsible for the assassination of 20,000 Vietnamese -- became, according to historian Marilyn Young, ?an extortionist?s paradise, with payoffs as available for denunciation as for protection.?  Once again, the CIA is reportedly passing out bags of money and anyone on the ground with a grudge, or the desire to eliminate an enemy, or simply the desire to make some of that money can undoubtedly feed information into the system, watch the drones do their damnedest, and then report back that more ?terrorists? are dead.  Just assume that at least some of those ?militants? dying in Pakistan, and possibly many of them, aren?t who the CIA hopes they are.

Species of the Day 7th February 2010 - Trachypithecus-delacouri

clipped by: celestialdancer
clippers remarks: Delacour?s Langur, Trachypithecus delacouri, is listed as ?Critically Endangered? on the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM. Found only in north-central Vietnam, Delacour?s Langur is one of the rarest and most threatened primates on Earth.
With a population estimated to be less than 250 mature individuals, fragmented into numerous subpopulations, most of which are unviable in the long-term, this species is dangerously close to extinction. The level of hunting has reduced in recent years as a result of increased legal protection, but continues to pose a significant threat, whilst ongoing habitat loss is contributing to the further isolation of the remaining populations.
Recent commitments by the Vietnamese government and several international conservation organisations to do more to protect Delacour?s Langur have greatly improved the chances of saving this rare and remarkable species. The main priority is to increase the level of protection and law enforcement within tho

A native of New Martinsville, W.Va., voters elected first elected Murtha to Congress in a 1974 special election that spelled impending doom for President Nixon and congressional Republicans. That fall, Democrats wrestled away 49 House seats from the GOP, reeling from the scourge of Watergate and a presidency in shambles.

Murtha enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1952 and became a drill instructor at Parris Island. He served in Korea and received a Bronze Star and Two Purple Hearts for his service in Vietnam. He continued to be a member of the Marine Corps Reserves until he resigned as a colonel in 1990.

John Murtha dies at 77

John Murtha smiles after winning reelection.

Rep. John Murtha, a Pennsylvania powerhouse for 36 years in Congress

died Monday afternoon due to complications from recent surgery.

An announcement from his office said Murtha died at 1:18 p.m. at the Virginia Hospital Center, where he had been admitted last week after having his gallbladder removed at Bethesda Naval Hospital.

A Marine veteran of the Vietnam War, the 77-year-old Democrat won national fame for standing up against U.S. military involvement in Iraq. But in Congress itself, he also symbolized an old school generation going back to Tip O?Neill and the Democratic heyday of the 70s, when the House was less divided by partisan ideology than by often regional interests.

With his military credentials and conservative western Pennsylvania district, Murtha moved easily in this world. It was his house within the House, and he was forever ?Captain Jack? and the mayor of ?Murtha?s Corner.?

Condolences to the Murtha family.
