There is no honor in their death unless we complete the mission they died fighting. The ones that hold my contempt are those who, even today, know of the sacrifice made, the incredible progress gained and still will not acknowledge what was won on the ground in Iraq. What we achieved in the face of an implacable enemy, overcoming many in our own government willfully ignorant of our struggle, is what I believe to be the defining moment of my generation. The veteran today is the embodiment of what it means to be an American. Even when our valor was used for political sport, we continued to serve quietly. This is truly without precedent.
If you can?t bring yourself to give the living the sense of accomplishment for winning a war that many claimed was endless, at least humor the dead. Allow them to rest knowing that the war that took their lives was won because of their sacrifice. Is that too much to ask for? Even when he was a figure of lefty fun, and I was your standard-issue college default lefty. Straightforward, said what was on his mind. Most famous for his ?I am in control here? after Reagan was shot. Much mocked at the time and since. The three-time Secretary of State, 85, was admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital on January 28, 2010 in critical condition with an infection. He lost his fight on February 20, 2010. I was a child during Vietnam and Watergate, and learned cynicism at the same time I learned to multiple two digit numbers and write complete sentences. Zinns view is a thought-provoking antidote to my baseline views. I think Im going to post it in my classroom. ?To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacri?ce, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places?and there are so many?where people have behaved magni?cently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don?t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an in?nite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in de?ance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.? The only thing that I really remember from his short 4 years was his brother Billy, we all loved Billy, ate peanuts, drank beer and puked on foreign dignitaries, good stuff, that explains the picture of Billy Beer, I actually have a can of it somewhere.
