The Persistence of Nature

clipped by: celestialdancer
clippers remarks: A friend once spoke this "vision" of nature subtly flowing into everything. This article shows it beautifully.

There is something even more interesting about these buildings because of interplay of nature - at least for me.

Some historic, religious structures, like Angkor Wat in Cambodia or the pyramids in Egypt, draw hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.  Other temples, tombs and mosques, no less spectacular than their tourist-heavy peers, have been reclaimed by nature, turning from architectural marvels into man-made shells covered with trees, plants, vines, or sand.  Despite being aged and broken down, the unique hybrid of man-made elements and natural ones makes the ruins below as spectacular as when they were newly constructed.

The Miracles Of Realism

clipped by: debbyski
Clip Source: www.nytimes.com
There?s an exchange in ?The Quiet American,? Graham Greene?s novel about the damage American good intentions can cause, that I?ve thought about a lot.

?You and your like are trying to make a war with the help of people who just aren?t interested.?

?They want enough rice. They don?t want to be shot at. They want one day to be much the same as another. They don?t want our white skins around telling them what they want.?

Vietnam teaches several lessons, the first of which is that the United States can have normal relations with countries whose political systems and ideologies it rejects.

There remains the mystery of Vietnamese forgiveness. Of course, a victor can always be magnanimous

I don?t know how to transplant that notion to the Middle East. I do know Obama has to reject Pyle ? ?They don?t want Communism? ? for Fowler ? ?They want enough rice? ? to advance his vision of a more peaceful world.
