Hazlitt got gloomily drunk for a fortnight after the battle of Waterloo, accurately anticipating that decades of reaction lay ahead, now that Boney had been definitely put away, with the Holy Alliance in the saddle and the French contagion safely bottled up. Smart fellow, that Hazlitt. He should have stayed drunk for a month.

Sometimes, on the edge of a new decade, things look dismal, but one has the feeling that something good just might be around the corner. The 70s for example: At their onset, Nixon was in the high noon of his first term, presiding over frightful slaughter in Vietnam, while his Attorney General, John Mitchell, pored over plans to lock up the left at home. It looked as though darkest night was falling.

Forget Vietnam Analogies - Remember Cambodia and Laos - now Pakistan

clipped by: nedhamson1
clippers remarks: Pakistan is beginning to look like a combination of the not-so-secret wars in Cambodia and Laos - Those pesky Viet Cong kept slipping into Laos and Cambodia to escape B-52s. Those Taliban - they just wont stay in one place.

Didnt the British say the same thing about those pesky Minute Men and Green Mountain boys. Not saying the Taliban are right in any way, its just that - we are the British to the Afghans. When Afghans unite for their own freedom against the Taliban view of the world, they will win and we can go home. The training up of Afghan army and police also seems a lot like what we did not get right in Vietnam. why? Because, we are simply empowering rule by old tribal war lords. I suspect that the Afghan people want none of the Taliban, us or the tribal war lords. Think about how to help them come to fore might help to bring peace that will last.

Bombing in Karachi Kills 25

On Monday, a suicide bomber attacked a Shia procession commemorating Ashura in Karachi, killing at least 25 people and injuring 50. Today?s incident on MA Jinnah Road was the latest in a string of violence in Pakistan this past weekend. Following the assassination of mid-level political administrator Sarfaraz Khan and his family in the Kurram tribal area Sunday, a suicide bomber killed at least 10 people and wounded more than 80 during a Shia religious procession in Muzaffarabad,

Americas Most-Decorated Soldier Dies

Waco, TX, United States (AHN) - A soldier believed to be Americas most-decorated living fighter died on Wednesday. Until his death in Waco, Texas; Retired Army Col. Robert Lewis Howard, 70, was said to be Americas most celebrated living soldier, receiving numerous awards including the Medal of Honor.

He will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. Texas Gov. Rick Perry in a statement said Howard was the bravest soldier he ever met.

He received the Medal of Honor in 1971 for rescuing a platoon leader who was wounded while taking on heavy enemy fire.

During his 4-and-a-half years in Vietnam, Howard was wounded 14 times for which he received eight Purple Heart Medals.

THE DELIBERATE LOWERING OF THE QUALITY OF AMERICAN LIFE: UNWINNABLE WARS

This next section is even more astonishing. Most of us never understood why things like "Hamburger Hill" happened in Vietnam, where soldiers were continually ordered to retake the same hill and perpetually fall back, over and over again, causing massive casualties with no tactical significance.

Or, lets say, no apparent  tactical significance.

This is truly sickening to comprehend, but for those who treat war like a chess game, the greater design is revealed by Dr. Beters testimony (emphasis added):

[The New World Order plan] required subtle movement of the American political system in the direction of dictatorship. It required weakening of Americas financial and monetary system.

And to bring about the radical changes desired, it meant wars with the United States carefully maneuvered into a losing position.

Americas first no-win war was the Korean War.

New Warbler Discovered in Laos

ScienceDaily (Dec. 24, 2009) ? A diminutive, colorful bird living in the rocky forests of Laos and Vietnam has been discovered by a team of scientists from the Wildlife Conservation Society, Lao PDR Department of Forestry, Swedish University of Agricultural Science, Swedish Museum of Natural History, BirdLife International and other groups.

Named the "limestone leaf warbler" because it breeds in Laoss limestone karst environments -- a region known for unusual wildlife -- it is similar to other warblers in this area of Southeast Asia, except for its distinct vocalizations and slight morphological differences.

The tiny bird is greenish-olive with a yellow breast and striped crown. Although it looks similar to other warblers, it is smaller with shorter wings and a larger bill than its closest relative the sulfur-breasted leaf warbler.

In Russia, foreboding about Americas war in Afghanistan

clipped by: dgreplay

MOSCOW ? Thirty years ago this week, the Red Army began its invasion of Afghanistan , a move that sank the Soviet Union in a decade of guerrilla war and hastened the collapse of the Cold War empire.

Today, as former Soviet soldiers watch American troops trying to pacify the same stretches of Afghan land they once fought for, aging Soviet generals and grunts alike are reminded of a war theyd rather forget.

The retired soldiers talk about Afghanistan in terms that echo the American experience in Vietnam : of winning battles but losing the campaign, watching the local population throw its support behind an insurgency and, finally, coming home to a country that no longer understood or supported their war

The Haunting, Beautiful "Unchopping a Tree" Video You Must See

The latest work from Maya Lin is a green call to action. Also see 11 powerful environmental messages.

World renown American artist and architect Maya Lin -- designer of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington -- is in Copenhagen today with the What is Missing? campaign. As part of this memorial she has unveiled a stunning multimedia piece called Unchopping A Tree.

The slow-burning, reflective piece features ethereal music by Brian Eno. "If deforestation were happening in your city, how quickly would you work to stop it?" the video asks, pointing out that 90 acres of rainforest are destroyed every minute. Deforestation threatens half of the worlds species, and is responsible for 20% of global warming emissions.

We can reduce emissions and protect species. "Together we can save two birds with one tree," the piece argues.

Purple Hearts On Death Row: War Damaged Vets Should Not Be Executed By the State

Mental exhaustion. Battle fatigue. PTSD. Whatever its called, many of our soldiers who served in wars over the years came home with combat-related mental illness, traumatized by the carnage and destruction they saw and experienced.

Unfortunately, too many veterans mental conditions have fueled criminal behavior resulting in their imprisonment. Dating back to the Civil War, veteran incarceration rates increased after each conflict.

This is not a small, marginal problem. Government statistics for the 1980s show that 21 percent of state prison inmates then were Vietnam veterans. The U.S. Department of Defense and the Veterans Administration estimate that two of every five of the 800,000 new Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans exhibit post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms.

As veterans ourselves, we believe that people who commit crimes as a result of severe mental impairments should not be executed.

Private Kham Xiong and many of his family were natives of Minnesotas Twin Cities where there are large Lao Hmong communities in both St. Paul and Minneapolis. U.S. Army Private First Class Xiong was a Hmong refugee born in Thailand following the communist takeover in Laos and Hmong exodus at the end of the Vietnam War.

Viktoria Cowley was just a toddler when she was airlifted out of Vietnam, one of 99 children plucked from the war-torn country by the Daily Mail. Now she is trying to reunite the scattered evacuees.

Viktoria Cowley doesnt know how old she is, but she thinks about 36. Orphaned at a young age during the Vietnam War, she doesnt even know her parents names.

Her earliest documented experience dates from April 1975, when she appeared on the front page of the Daily Mail, aged about two. She was one of 99 babies and children airlifted out of Saigon in the newspapers mercy mission as the Vietcong advanced at the end of the war.

Looking at 1975 Daily Mail, headline:

Now, three decades after her arrival in Britain, Viktoria, known as Vikki, of Eastbourne, has recently embarked on a mission of her own - to reunite her fellow travellers. She has made contact with 15 so far.

Afghanistan: Karzai rival withdrew under US pressure

Islamabad, 6 Nov. (AKI) - By Syed Saleem Shahzad - The United States put pressure on Afghan president Hamid Karzais rival, Abdullah Abdullah, to withdraw from the countrys presidential race and hand victory to Karzai, sources have told Adnkronos International (AKI).

Sources said the American pressure was part of a deal struck last week with the Pakistani military, which in exchange agreed to establish direct contact with the Taliban and obtain peace with Taliban-led insurgents in Afghanistan.

The deal also highlighted the key role played by the Pakistani armed forces in regional politics, according to sources.

The administration of US president Barack Obama fears that failure to combat extremism in Pakistan will have a dominoe effect on the whole region and lead to certain defeat of American interests in neighbouring Afghanistan.

Last month, the US Congress approved a 1.5 billion dollar annual aid package to Pakistan

Tom Tancredo Walks Off MSNBC Set Because Of Markos Moulitas

As a Republican student activist, Tancredo spoke out in favor of the Vietnam War but did not serve.

After graduating from college in June 1969, he became eligible to serve in Vietnam. Tancredo said he went for his physical, telling doctors hed been treated for depression, and eventually got a deferment.

On MSNBC Friday night, David Shuster (filling in for Ed Shultz) addressed hateful signs at Thursdays Capitol Hill "House call" against health care reform. But the discussion escalated into a fight that led a Republican guest to walk off the set.

Former Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo refused to criticize Republican leaders for participating in the event, saying there were equally offensive signs at anti-Bush rallies in the past. He said they should talk about the policy, not the signs.

Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitas defended health care reform, pointing out that the military uses government-run health care. Tancredo said veterans complained about their health care and would much rather have a private choice.

"Tom, Im a veteran. Okay?" Moulitas responded. "I did not get a deferment because I was too depressed to fight a war I supported in Vietnam. Im a veteran. They want a more effective V.A. ..."

Surviving Fort Hood

Home Fires - Five Iraq War Veterans on Their Return to American Life

Just as there is no way to explain the internal agony of war, there is no real way to explain what happens in its shadow. This is the domain of tortured minds that may never heal. This may very well be the legacy of Fort Hood.

Forty years ago I was a Marine returning from the war in Vietnam. I returned having been badly wounded in the chest and both legs. I tried to find solace in my scars but could not. I had abandoned my buddies only to come home to unchartered waters. Soon I found myself more terrified in peace than I was in war.

There is no way to sort through the nightmare that took place at Fort Hood. Soldiers are not supposed to die on their way to war and they most certainly are not supposed to die at the hands of those who care for their health.

Family of the deceased Opinion are asking that, in lieu of flowers (which arent free) that each and every one of us do our part to d

The Opinion "Freedom isnt free" has died after a brief illness, owing in large part to its inability to pay for badly needed medical treatment. Having spent its early years being invoked to shut up dirty fucking hippies, its later years degraded into increasingly violent confrontations with health insurance companies and their motto "Health Care Isnt Free, It Isnt Even Health Care." With no more Free Time on its hands, it joined the ranks of the approximately 45,000 Americans who die every year because, well, you already know why.

Born during the era of The Vietnam War Isnt Free it was viewed as a comforting remonstration against anyone who ever pussifyingly questioned the rightness of our nations bloody habit of killing brown people in far away lands.

Having married its childhood sweetheart (Sex Isnt Free) only to discover its mate wanted to keep its night job, it sought a divorce (that wasnt Free) and lived out the rest of its years as a Free Spirit.

The Axis of Idiots - note from a Retired Marine

clipped by: billpar
clippers remarks: You want to run from Iraq and abandon the Iraqis to murderers just as you did to the Vietnamese. Iraq, like Vietnam, is another war that you were for, before you were against it.
John Murtha, you said our military was broken. You said we cant win militarily in Iraq. You accused United States Marines of cold-blooded murder without proof and said we should redeploy to Okinawa. Okinawa, John? And the Democrats call you their military expert! Are you sure you didnt suffer a traumatic brain injury while you were off building your war hero resume? Youre a sad, pitiable, corrupt and washed up politician. Youre not a Marine, sir. You wouldnt amount to a good pimple on a real Marines butt. Youre a phony and a disgrace. Run away, John.

The Axis of Idiots

Jimmy Carter, you are the father of the Islamic Nazi movement. You threw the Shah under the bus, welcomed the Ayatollah home, and then lacked the spine to confront the terrorists when they took our embassy and our people hostage. Youre the runner-in-chief.

Bill Clinton, you played ring around the Lewinsky while the terrorists were at war with us. You got us into a fight with them in Somalia and then you ran from it. Your weak-willed responses to the USS Cole and the First Trade Center Bombing and Our Embassy Bombings emboldened the killers. Each time you failed to respond adequately, they grew bolder, until 9/11/2001.

John Kerry, dishonesty is your most prominent attribute. You lied about American Soldiers
in Vietnam. Your military service, like your life, is more fiction than fact. Youve accused our military of terrorizing women and children in Iraq. You called Iraq the wrong war, wrong place, wrong time, the same words you used to describe Vietnam.. Youre a fake

Hippos crowd Israel zoo

clipped by: tabsey
Clip Source: www.abc.net.au

Israel is dealing with a unique problem - what to do with a surplus of hippos.

Israels zoo has had a baby boom in the hippo department.

A high birthrate has boosted the hippo population to 40 - far more than the average zoo could handle.

Zookeepers say they reached a point where they could find nothing to do with so many of them.

So in recent months, 14 hippos have been shipped by air or sea to zoos in Russia, Turkey, Vietnam, even Kazakhstan.

They say Israel is suddenly the worlds top exporter of hippopotamuses. Many more zoos have placed orders.
