Miss World Final Moved From Ukraine Over Georgia Conflict

clipped by: victorlamp

This years Miss World final in Kiev has been cancelled amid fears that Russia may turn its military might on the Ukraine.

The 120 contestants were due to compete at the Ukraina National Palace on October 4.

But the event has been called off and a new host country is being sought, the Daily Telegraph has learned.

In a statement, the organisers said: "Due to circumstances beyond our control, it was with deep regret that the decision was taken to postpone the Miss World 2008 Final. This decision was taken in the interest of contestants and the Miss World Organisation."

A new venue and date will be announced next week, the statement added. Nha Trang in Vietnam is being considered as a last-minute alternative.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says it is right to finally recognise the heroism of Australian troops against overwhelming odds in the Battle of Long Tan.

The officer who commanded the troops in the bloody Vietnam War conflict, Harry Smith, and two of his fellow officers of D Company 6 RAR are to receive gallantry awards for their actions 42 years ago.

Surviving veterans of the battle will be able to wear a unit citation recognising their bravery, the federal government has announced.

Mr Smith, a major at the time of the battle, has been offered the Star of Gallantry, the nations second-highest military honour behind the Victoria Cross.

Former lieutenants Dave Sabben and Geoff Kendall will be offered the Medal for Gallantry, equivalent to the Military Cross.

Mr Rudd said today he believed it was right to finally recognise their service.

"These are veterans who are getting on," Mr Rudd said.

Obon (??, Obon?) or just Bon (?, Bon?) is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the departed (deceased) spirits of ones ancestors. This Buddhist custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places and visit and clean their ancestors graves, and when the spirits of ancestors are supposed to revisit the household altars. Also called the Feast of Lanterns, it has been celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years and traditionally includes a dance, known as Bon-Odori.

Calif. lawsuit challenges McCain candidacy

clippers remarks: After some of his statements abut Obamas heritage, McCain would have to follow his own suggestions.
Personally, the law wrong, but it is there.
Maybe it is part of the move to get Arnie into the White House.

SAN FRANCISCO (Legal Newsline) - A John McCain presidency would be illegal because the Arizona senator was not born in the United States, says a lawsuit filed this week by the American Independent Party.

The minor party says it wants McCains name removed from ballots in California because federal law would bar the former Vietnam War POW from taking office were he to be elected in November, according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco.

Article II of the U.S. Constitution disqualifies McCain from assuming office because he was born in the Commonwealth of Panama in 1936, while his father was stationed at Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone, the lawsuit contends.

The American Independent Party claims it will be "irreparably harmed by Senator McCains illegal and illegitimate presence on the ballot." The plaintiffs in the case want McCain enjoined from running for president.

East vs West

clipped by: pascual
clippers remarks: globalist

Between 1598 and 1894, there were only three brief wars that involved China ? the 1659-60 and the 1767-71 wars with Burma, and the 1788-89 war with Vietnam, as well as two wars that did not involve China ? the Siamese-Burmese wars of 1607-18 and of 1660-62.

Indeed, insofar as China is concerned, we should speak of a 500 years? peace since, in the 200 years preceding the 1592 Japanese invasion of Korea, China was at war with other East Asian states only during the invasion of Vietnam in 1406-28 to restore the Tran dynasty.
