Of the thousands of pagodas that can be found across the nation, Doi (bat) Pagoda has a unique claim to fame: thousands of bats call it home. Though neither large nor particularly exquisite, all who hear of it wish to visit. Officially known as Mahatup in the Khmer language, its colloquial name is bat pagoda.

What John McCain Should Know

John McCain should know. More than any other candidate for president, John McCain should know that peace talks can be stronger and smarter than bombs, that withdrawing American soldiers can be the best way to achieve stability, and that the best way to protect American troops is to bring them home from the war zone.

John McCain should know, because he has lived this experience. After being held for nearly six years and tortured in a North Vietnamese prison, Lt. Cmdr. John McCain was freed?not by a daring commando raid on an enemy compound but by a negotiated settlement arrived at in peace talks in Paris. President Richard Nixon agreed to remove U.S. troops from Vietnam within 60 days, and the North Vietnamese government agreed to release American POWs like McCain as those troops were withdrawn.

Success in Iraq confounds the Democrats

clipped by: bambino101
clippers remarks: But wait! If the war is now "won," it may help Obama, but doesnt it also help President Bush? His catastrophic, failed, mess of a war in Iraq--the worst decision ever made, by the worst president ever (as the ranters tell us)--was supposed to be the battering ram that would break the Republican hold on the White House, the core of the case Democrats intended to make that his administration had been a disaster like no other in history, Vietnam cubed. When Bush doubled down with the surge in early 2007, Democrats placed a huge bet on failure and sat back to enjoy and cash in their winnings. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate majority leader Harry Reid released a joint letter that said a surge would be useless; Senators Joe Biden and Chuck Hagel introduced a resolution opposing the buildup; votes of no confidence followed in rapid succession. "We are going to pick up seats as a result of this war," Reid exulted. Democrats in the Senate spent much of their time forcing a series
Thousands of Deadly Islamic Terror Attacks Since 9/11

A funny thing happened this summer: John McCain taunted Barack Obama into making a trip to Iraq, whereupon the press looked around and finally noticed what those who were paying attention had known for some months now. The country portrayed for the last four years by the press and the Democrats as Vietnam-in-the-Desert is doing much better, what with al Qaeda on the run, the Sunnis and Shias coming together, the Shia militias largely defeated, and the war itself looking more or less .??.??. won.

"The combat phase finally is ending," trilled the Associated Press, which had been warning of doom only weeks earlier. "The United States is now winning the war that two years ago had seemed lost. .??.??. People are expressing a new confidence in their security forces. .??.??. Parks are filled every weekend with families playing."

U.S. Soldiers Executed Iraqis, Statements Say

New York Times

In March or April 2007, three noncommissioned United States Army officers, including a first sergeant, a platoon sergeant and a senior medic, killed four Iraqi prisoners with pistol shots to the head as the men stood handcuffed and blindfolded beside a Baghdad canal, two of the soldiers said in sworn statements.

After the killings, the first sergeant ? the senior noncommissioned officer of his Army company ? told the other two to remove the men?s bloody blindfolds and plastic handcuffs, according to the statements made to Army investigators, which were obtained by The New York Times.

After removing the blindfolds and handcuffs, the three soldiers shoved the four bodies into the canal, rejoined other members of their unit waiting in nearby vehicles and drove back to their combat outpost in southwest Baghdad, the statements said.

Vets, military families: McCain has been AWOL on needs

clipped by: tabsey

Democratic veterans praised Republican John McCain?s Vietnam service today, but said he?s been ?AWOL? when it comes to boosting funding for vets? medical care and the GI Bill.

?Senator McCain had honorably served as a POW and was courageous and was steadfast and he kept faith with his fellow POWs,? retired Air Force Col. Dick Klass told the DNC Veterans and Military Families Caucus.

?He has not kept faith with American?s veterans,?

It was Barack Obama, vets and military family members said, who had fought to repair the scandalously decrepit facilities at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and pushed legislation to help an estimated 200,000 homeless vets.

Now, Democratic vets, say it?s the non-veteran Obama ? not the revered war hero McCain ? whom they can trust to help veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress and combat brain injuries and military families strained by the pressure of four or five combat tours in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Open Letter to Senator John McCain

clipped by: cptenaud
clippers remarks: Lets talk about another POW: Floyd James Thompson. Outside of the military, and even inside, I doubt there are few that have ever heard of him. (Read this book for a full history) He was the longest held POW in US History, just 10 days short of 9 years in captivity during the Vietnam War. He was a pilot and shot down just like you, Senator McCain. Why has the general public never heard of him and his sacrifice on behalf of the nation though? I guess its because he never used his experience for personal gain or notoriety. His story is much sadder actually. After his release, his marriage fell apart, he developed a drinking problem, and eventually suffered a massive heart attack. He represented the plight of so many POWs, he suffered silently, forgotten by a country trying to heal the still open wounds from the Vietnam War.

To the Senior Senator from Arizona:

Apparently you dont read the diaries on Vetvoice. Its OK and Im not at all surprised. You havent been listening to the needs and concerns of this countrys veterans for sometime now. I am writing you in response to your extremely troubling appearance last night on Jay Lenos program. When questioned on the number of homes you own (or really your wife), you dodged the question and again played the POW card. In case you missed some of the analysis of your answer on MSNBC, here it is:

What does that have to do with the question at hand?  You are running for President of the United States, you are expected to be accountable to the people of this country.  Of course I and every other citizen respects your sacrifice as well as every other former POW, but you have voluntarily undertaken this campaign.  We the people are allowed, and even expected, to question some of your basic qualifications and financial background.

I Want My Country Back

clipped by: BartendingBear
clippers remarks: "I love America, and I cant stand quietly by while the land of peace and liberty is being destroyed.

I love the America of the Constitution and limited government - not the America of the Patriot Act and the Orwellian Department of Homeland Security.

I love the America that Washington and Jefferson said should be far removed from all the age-old quarrels of Europe and Asia, while trading benevolently with people all over the world - not the America that has troops in a hundred countries while our own government prohibits us from peaceful trading with dozens of countries."
Thoughts on the American empire

Is it an empire?

Whenever I say that America has become an empire, someone is sure to say Im being ridiculous.

But what do you call a government that has tried (usually successfully) to force "regime changes" in Panama, Grenada, South Vietnam, Cuba, Guatemala, Chile, Rhodesia, South Africa, Iraq (in 1963), the Philippines, Serbia, Afghanistan (twice), Iran and several other countries that dont immediately come to mind?

What do you call a government whose leader says everyone must play by his rules or risk being attacked?

World government

America rules the world - by force.

And thats ironic. Because for as long as I can remember, conservatives have been railing against the threat of world government.

But now we actually have a form of world government - a government run by George Bush and enforced by the American military - and most conservatives are all for it.

If you ask

foreigners, they make it clear that its Americas bullying foreign policy they detest.

Billionaire Finances Obama Attack Ads

WASHINGTON ? The conservative group running advertisements that highlight Senator Barack Obama?s association with the 1960s radical William Ayers is being financed by a Texas billionaire who has raised money for Senator John McCain and who also helped finance the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign against Senator John Kerry in 2004.

The billionaire, Harold Simmons, donated nearly $2.9 million on Aug. 12 to the American Issues Project, the group running the advertisements, papers it has filed with the Federal Election Commission show.

In 2004, Mr. Simmons donated $2 million to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, whose advertisements against Mr. Kerry included one that, with allegations since discredited, impugned his military service as a Swift boat captain during the Vietnam War.

In Taiwan

TAN LOC ISLAND, VIETNAM -- Nearly 70 young Vietnamese women swept past in groups of five, twirling and posing like fashion models, all competing for the hand of a Taiwanese man who had paid a matchmaking service about $6,000 for the privilege of marrying one of them.

Sporting jeans and a black T-shirt, 20-year-old Le Thi Ngoc Quyen paraded in front of the stranger, hoping that he would select her.

"I felt very nervous," she recalled recently as she described the scene. "But he chose me, and I agreed to marry him right away."

Quyen has not gotten rich -- her husband earns a modest living as a construction worker -- but the couple have paid off her fathers debts.

Poverty and the proximity of foreign businessmen seem to be major reasons for the trend. The biggest complaints come from womens groups, who consider it demeaning, and from young village men for whom the pool of potential brides is shrinking.

Incompetence Or A Stunt

Wet-starts, done either deliberately (the starter motor switch allowed kerosene to pool in the engine and give a wet start) or accidentally, shoot a large flame from the tail of the aircraft. Wet starting was a common practice among young hot-dog pilots.

Zuni Rockets Were Volatile Design

In McCains case, the wet-start cooked off and launched the M34 Zuni rocket from the rear F-4 that punctured the Skyhawks fueltank, knocked the M-65 1000 lb bomb off its 500 lb rated mount, and touched off the explosions and massive fire.

McCain- McBush- Bush Be Frightened

Wars on all sides, and your civil rights being diminished by the day with new laws to curb your freedom and expand the powers of FBI, CIA and all the other 3letter clubs. Americans are already afraid of their own government. Time to take it back! It is your Land, after all.

The world according to John McCain is one in which America is triumphant at home and abroad thanks to the Bush legacy, rolling to victory internationally and mastering its domestic economic problems. If daily news, like reports of the ten French soldiers killed by a resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan and the US governments imminent nationalization of much of the American mortgage-lending industry, would seem to deny such a rosy scenario, then that only shows skeptics lack the courage that sustained McCain as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

There you have it encapsulated, the McCain campaign for President, an irrational mélange of patriotic swagger and blindness to reality that is proving disturbingly successful with uninformed voters.

The economy is in a downward spiral, the national debt is at an all-time high, the dollar is an international disgrace and inflation in July had the steepest rise in twenty-seven years, driven by oil prices fivefold higher

John McCain Needs to Lay Off the POW Talk

clipped by: cptenaud
clippers remarks: The fact is, John McCains service during Vietnam was honorable and he sacrificed a great deal. But his service to the country carries no more weight than that of any other POW. Likewise, while McCain has given so much to his country, thousands of veterans--past and present--have given as much or more. In this war alone, thousands of troops have lost limbs, been paralyzed, and been burned beyond recognition. So to see McCain resort to playing the POW card when answering legitimate questions, in my mind, cheapens that experience. And by cheapening his own experience in war, he degrades all of our experiences in war. He turns the horrific incidents weve all seen, touched, smelled, and felt into a lame excuse to earn political points. And it dishonors us all.

And while Spencer Ackerman is not a veteran himself, I think he sums up what many combat vets are feeling today after hearing the campaigns statement:
Clip Source: www.vetvoice.com

by: Brandon Friedman

Thu Aug 21, 2008

When John McCain revealed that he didnt know how many houses he and his wife currently own (they have at least eight properties), the Obama campaign pounced.  They accused him of being elitist and disconnected and launched an ad within hours.  The McCain campaign--realizing this was trouble--retorted the only way they knew how: With a truly stupefying response from McCain spokesman Brian Rogers:

"This is a guy who lived in one house for five and a half years -- in prison," referring to the prisoner of war camp that McCain was in during the Vietnam War.

Yes, you read that right.  McCain justified not knowing how many houses he has by saying he was a POW in Vietnam, four decades ago.  I have some things to say about this:

1.  Being a POW is not an excuse for everything.

The bottom line is that were sick of hearing about this as a justification for everything John McCain does or doesnt do.  This instance is only the latest example, as others have noted.

Film Reveals CIAs Most Secret Place on Earth

clipped by: papananook
clippers remarks: This films analysis sets it apart from other books and documentaries on the subject, most of which justify the conflict, lauding the CIA operatives and their Air America pilots as heroes.

The reality, as Alfred McCoy says towards the end of the film, was very different. "We destroyed a whole civilisation, we wiped it off the map. We incinerated, atomised human remains in this air war and what happened in the end? We lost."

The covert nature of the conflict meant that U.S. forces were able to ignore virtually all the rules of engagement operating in Vietnam. Every building was a potential target and the civilian toll was huge.

The situation grew worse in 1970 when U.S. President Nixon authorised massive B-52 bombing strikes on Laos, which remained classified information until many years later.

American planes dropped an average of one planeload of bombs on targets in Laos every eight minutes, 24 hours a day for nine years, making it the most heavily bombed country on earth
[A view of Long Chen. The most secret location in the secret war against Laos was the former CIA air base of Long Chen, a place that remain off limits even today. ]A view of Long Chen. The most secret location in the secret war against Laos was the former CIA air base of Long Chen, a place that remain off limits even today.

PHNOM PENH - It was known as the ?secret war, a covert operation waged by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) throughout the sixties and early seventies against communist guerrillas in Laos.

A new film, ?The Most Secret Place on Earth, to be released in cinemas across Europe later this year, explores this little known conflict.

"I first got the idea to do the film when I visited the Plain of Jars in Laos in 2002," recalled Marc Eberle,36, the German director in an interview with IPS.

Little is known about the Lao conflict despite the fact that it remains the largest and most expensive paramilitary operation ever run by the U.S.

"Laos was the progenitor of the way America fights wars in the 21st century," he says.
