Clipmarks | Vietnam ClipsTom Lewis, member of the Catonsville 9, diesclipped by: hayesstwclippers remarks: Tom Lewis, who was jailed for protesting against the Vietnam War, died recently, just before the 40th anniversary of the protest Forty years ago next month, Tom Lewis and eight other Vietnam War protesters strode into the offices of U.S. Selective Service Board 33 in Catonsville and left a mark on history. The "Catonsville Nine" emptied file cabinets, hauled 600 draft records into the parking lot and burned them with homemade napalm. Then they prayed and waited to be arrested. Mr. Lewis activism on behalf of peace continued through the rest of his life, ending only Friday, when he died in his sleep at his home in Worcester, Mass., at the age of 68. Tom Lewis was part of a famed group of Catholic anti-war activists led by Philip and Daniel Berrigan, both priests. The trial of the Catonsville Nine would land Mr. Lewis in prison for more than three years - and become the subject of a play and a movie. Five of the Catonsville Nine are still living - Daniel Berrigan, Thomas and Marjorie Melville, John Hogan and George Mische. ![]()
Food riots fear after rice price hits a highclipped by: JICWyllieA global rice shortage that has seen prices of one of the worlds most important staple foods increase by 50 per cent in the past two weeks alone is triggering an international crisis, with countries banning export and threatening serious punishment for hoarders. Already China, India, Egypt, Vietnam and Cambodia have imposed tariffs or export bans, as it has become clear that world production of rice this year will decline in real terms by 3.5 per cent. The increase in rice prices - which some believe could increase by a further 40 per cent in coming months - has matched sharp inflation in other key food products. According to the World Banks figures, the real price of rice rose to a 19-year high last month, while the real price of wheat has hit a 28-year high. But while drought is one factor, another is the switch from food to biofuel production in large areas of the world, in particular to fulfil the US energy demands.
