Who?s Feeding the Watchdog?clipped by: papananookThe relationship between the media and the military has always been rife with manipulation and antagonism, though I?ve always considered the idea of an ?adversarial press? to be far more myth than literal truth. Take the well-worn accusation that an ?adversarial press? turned public opinion against the Vietnam War. Never mind the most important lesson of modern guerrilla war history ? namely that, short of genocide, military might doesn?t defeat guerrilla insurgencies. It only multiplies the number of insurgents. (Thank you, War Nerd Gary Brecher). The 20th Century Fund Task Force on the Military and Media notes: ?scholarly data casts doubt on this (the-media-lost-the-Vietnam-war) view. Although the scenes of actual carnage may be most vividly remembered, they were but a small fraction of the footage from Vietnam. And television was not the only source of the public?s perception of the horror of war.? reflecting ?a critical view of the war only after public opinion had begun to oppose it ![]() Für die Inhalte dieses Feeds ist alleine der jeweilige Autor/Anbieter verantwortlich. Clipmarks | Vietnam ClipsGreen Zone looking like Sitting Duckclipped by: citizenbfkclippers remarks: I was just thinking how the recent fighting in Baghdad, focused around the Green Zone and Sard City, had comparisons to the Tet Offensive in Vietnam, and those pictures of the US helicopters fleeing of the roof of the Hanoi US embassy. As a sidenote, It is interesting how an indigenous force uses the terrain and the weather while an occuping army fights against it. Could you imagine the US Army planing actions around sandstorms? I read that in Vietnam the Vietnamese quickly realized US actions, especially air strikes, always took a break for lunch. The USA should negotiate some final political settlement and get out of Iraq. I note there is a lot of the now-common propaganda between the lines involving latest battles, such as the idea the US is battling an "army." It is not an "army." It is a militia. Its made up of citizen soldiers mainly from their own neighborhoods. Compared to the US Army they are like fleas on the back of a dog; fleas that are apparently hard Clip Source: www.washingtonpost.com A Storm of Sand and Shelling Shelling rocked the Green Zone as a sandstorm blanketed Baghdad on Sunday, Clashes continued over the weekend in Sadr City, where U.S. and Iraqi forces have confronted fighters tied to the Mahdi Army, the Shiite militia loyal to anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. ![]()

Clipmarks | Vietnam ClipsIs Hillary Clinton Push Polling?clipped by: BobbyRutanclippers remarks: More: The questions started out normal enough, but got progressively more ridiculous. Early in the conversation Ed asked my preference among the Democratic candidates and I told him I was an Obama supporter. Then the questions turned to long Hillary-praising and Barack bashing policy statements with the response options being "Do you consider that a very strong, strong or weak or very weak reason to support her candidacy for president?" which is kind of an unanswerable question, and clearly not the point. At the end of the conversation they asked "Now based on everything weve discussed, who would you vote for?" The questions were often based on statements that I wouldnt agree with in the first place. Its classic push polling as Ive read about it, though never experienced it before. The questions are of the "Are you still beating your wife?" variety. No way to answer with any sense of veracity and integrity Clip Source: www.huffingtonpost.com North Carolina activist David LaMotte just got a push poll call from the firm of Geoff Garin, the new head of Hillary Clintons campaign team It wasnt as bad as asking "would it change your mind if you knew John Kerry actually bought his Vietnam medals off eBay." Or "How do you feel about John McCains illegitimate black children?" But it was a push poll nonetheless, This isnt the first time that the Clinton campaign or their allies have had pollsters offering positive information about Clinton and negative information about her opponents--they did it on the eve of the California primary and in South Carolina. (And firms linked to the Giuliani campaign made highly negative push poll calls against Mitt Romney in Iowa and New Hampshire) But its a disturbing practice precisely because it tries to spin the recipient under the pretense of merely asking about their views, and from everything I can tell, its a practice that Obama has avoided. Clipmarks | Vietnam ClipsIn defense of William Ayersclipped by: jklugmanclippers remarks: Wonderment said: Clip Source: bloggingheads.tv Ayers makes the claim that the use of violence, particularly with the aim of zero loss of life, was justified as a form of protest and pressure to end the Vietnam and Cambodian War. If you look at the crimes of the Johnson and Nixon administrations in their historical context (napalming civilians, Agent Orange, torture, starvation, mass murder, carpet bombings, persecution of dissidents in the US, including the murder of college students by the National Guard, pro-war police riots, disproportionately race-based conscription of 18-year-olds, etc. etc.), there is a case to be made that taking up arms against such a regime is justified. Now you may argue that the prospects of achieving success in ending the war through "revolutionary" violence were slim to none. I agree. ![]()
Sums it up nicely....clipped by: mooner-oneClip Source: www.lewrockwell.com Nothing NewTruly, sometimes I think there is nothing new on the face of the earth. Heres a quotation cited by Mark Twain around the turn of the 19th century. Read it and see if you dont recognize it from todays political discourse: "Even if the war be wrong we are in it and must fight it out: we cannot retire from it without dishonor." That war was in the Philippines. Perhaps you remember it from your history books. We "liberated" the country from the clutch of Spanish colonialism, but then decided we would just replace the Spanish rather than grant the people independence. They resisted, and we fought a second war in the islands against Filipino patriots. Today, all of our politicians take the same position in regard to Iraq: Well, it may have been the wrong thing to do, but were there and we cant leave without a victory. I heard the same refrain about the Vietnam War. Whatever happened to the saying "Inglorious peace is better than a dishonorable war"? ![]() Für die Inhalte dieses Feeds ist alleine der jeweilige Autor/Anbieter verantwortlich. Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital say the tumor threatens to suffocate Lai. They will remove the tumor in a 10-hour surgery on April 29. Schwannoma tumors are usually benign. Clipmarks | Vietnam ClipsUSA paralyzed by Iraqclipped by: masburyclippers remarks: Like Johnsons "Great Society", which fell over Vietnam, a host of domestic issues go un-addressed, as $3 trillion goes to Iraq Clip Source: www.nytimes.com Other nations can provide health care for everyone. The United States cannot. In an era in which a college degree is becoming a prerequisite for a middle-class quality of life, we are having big trouble getting our kids through high school. And despite being the wealthiest of all nations, nearly 10 percent of Americans are resorting to food stamps to maintain an adequate diet, and 4 in every 10 American children are growing up in families that are poor or near-poor. The U.S. seems almost paralyzed, mesmerized by Iraq and unable to generate the energy or the will to handle the myriad problems festering at home. The war will eventually cost a staggering $3 trillion or more, according to the Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz. When he was asked on ?Democracy Now!? about who is profiting from the war, he said the two big gainers were the oil companies and the defense contractors. Lyndon Johnson?s Great Society, which included the war on poverty, was crippled by the war in Vietnam. ![]()

This fight between Great Britain and its thirteen colonies was the result of years of growing conflict. After the French and Indian War that occurred between 1754-1763, the British government began requiring the colonies to pay higher taxes. Over time, protests and conflict led to a tightening of control by the Mother Country. Beginning with the fighting at Lexington and Concord in April 1775, open warfare broke out. ![]()

We need to be honest about that. For the past three years, Bush has shown no strategy aside from throwing more American blood and treasure into the vacum of chaos he created. He is biding his time, simply prolonging the disaster so he wont have to suffer the indignity of retreat. Hes saving that for his hapless successor. "You are cleaning up the mess afterward," he said. "What conditions would have to exist for you to recommend to the president that the current strategy is not working?" Clinton asked Petraeus, with only a slight edge of exasperation in her voice. The conditions, she added, "are unclear, they lack specificity."
