37-year-old recording of Kent State killings found
National Guard always denied order to fire

Listen to the order to shoot given by the Ohio National Guard

National Guard always denied order to fire

The command, as Alan Canfora heard it on a 37-year-old audio recording recently discovered in a government archive, appeared to leave no room for doubt. "Right here. Get set. Point. Fire." Then came 13 seconds of gunfire. When it ended, four students were dead and nine injured, and the shootings at Kent State University became engraved in Americas collective memory as one of the most painful days of the Vietnam era.

Yesterday, Mr Canfora, who was among the nine students wounded on that day, demanded a new investigation into the shootings at Kent State in Ohio, saying it was time to settle conclusively what led the contingent of National Guard troops to open fire on unarmed student protesters.

40 year old bullet removed from Vietnam mans heart

clipped by: vavee

HANOI, VIETNAM -- A Vietnamese soldier who was shot by U.S. troops in 1968 and has lived with a bullet lodged in his heart since then underwent surgery, and the slug was removed, doctors said Monday.

Le Dinh Hung, 60, underwent surgery Friday and is recovering quickly, said Dr. Nguyen Sinh Hien, who spent three hours operating on Hung at Hanoi Heart Hospital.

"It is the strangest case that I have ever seen," Hien said. "Normally a person with a bullet in his heart would die immediately if they didnt have surgery right away."

How to win wars against guerillas

clipped by: oscarrob
clippers remarks: If we were smart, this is how we would prosecute our war in Iraq and Afghanistan with all our troops. This is the only way that a guerrilla war can be won. Guerrilla wars, which is what these are, are won by winning the hearts and minds of the population. Mao proved it, Vietnam proved it, and it is being proved in Afghanistan and Iraq. Why we dont recognize it, except sporadically as a "risky strategy," is beyond me.

Its an intimate style of warfare and, for the Americans, a brutal one. They go weeks without showers or decent food. They live every day exposed to enemy fire, and it has cost them dearly. Over the past year, 1-32 has lost 19 men, almost half of the deaths in the entire 5,000-man brigade.

The Americans and their Afghan National Army allies live among the people on the valley floor, while the insurgents -- Taliban, al Qaeda and other fighters of various stripes -- are up in the steep, rocky ridges. When the insurgents attack, they fire down on American soldiers and Afghan civilians alike. "The semiotics of it are great," says Lt. Col. Chris Cavoli, commander of 1-32, a unit of the 10th Mountain Division. "You cant buy press like that. The way the fight is constructed is to deliver one message: Were here to protect you, and the bad guys are here to ruin your lives."
