The Wall

clipped by: m4a3223
clippers remarks: This clip is a reminder of some of our young men and women who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. Many names are on The Wall. I lost my cousin in the Vietnam conflict. He was only 19 years old. I was only around 7 when he went away but I remember him to this day. This past fall the Traveling Wall came through my hometown for 4 days. This was the first time I got to "see" my cousin since he was sent to war. I never have seen the real Wall before but I hope I can someday. If you get the chance maybe you can see the Wall or the Traveling Wall if it comes near you. You dont need to know anyone on there, in fact you are lucky if you dont. Its an eerie feeling walking amongst the names of the fallen but its also a reminder to each and everyone of us.

Vietnams Growing Role in Outsourcing

clipped by: vietnam
clippers remarks: Picture in vietnamnet.vn: E-Town, rapidly developed hi-tech center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. HCMC has recently been chosen as 1 of 10 new destinations of outsourcing, follow Business Week.

When Microsofts video game unit began looking to offshore some work in 2002, Vietnam was hardly an obvious choice. But after a fact-finding team returned from an Asia-wide tour including stops in India, China, and South Korea, a small outfit named Glass Egg Digital in Ho Chi Minh City was a top contender. After successfully completing a pilot project designing 3-D racing cars used on the Forza Motorsport game installed in every Xbox console, Glass Eggs relationship with Microsoft (MSFT) has steadily grown.

Homegrown Vietnamese companies are gaining momentum too. The countrys largest outsourcing outfit is a division of Hanoi-based IT company FPT Corp., which just garnered a $36.5 million investment from private equity firm Texas Pacific and Intel Capital.

Further proof of Vietnams potential are the ringing endorsements the country has received from some of ITs biggest names. In March, Intel (INTC) Chairman Craig Barrett visited Vietnam to unveil plans for a $600 million chip testing and assembly plant (see BusinessWeek.com, 3/13/06, "Good Morning, Vietnam"). Intel subsequently bumped up the figure to $1 billion.

What is Web 2.0 for donkeys?

What is Web 2.0 for donkeys?

What is Web 2.0 really? A quick search on any search engines lists around half a billion web sites on this topic! Therefore the topic has become popular though its a hoax. Hoax is like a corporate balloon they make up in the media world and blow it so much it looks like a real thing although its a lie. Like WMD in Iraq! The main reason why web 2.0 does not make sense is that first of all, there was no such thing as web 1.0. That never existed. Even the web is a network of computers that was built on a computer geeks concept called a WAN. Nowadays instead of Wide we can use Worldwide or Global network whichever sounds better than web. But web has been growing at a mind turning speed despite lots of interventions and obstacles. These control freaks range from corporate giants like AOL, Microsoft, etc trying to monopolize it and turn internet users into cash-cows to fascist states like China and Burma that have created a bizarre kind of job by promoting a concept called filtering. Web was once like a snowball crushing anything on its way but now its a black hole that sucks in anything from books and media to US senators calling it A Series of Tubes.

Advice, But Often No Consent

Dec. 6, 2006 - America was mired in a frustrating, seemingly endless war. An election year was approaching, and the president?s own party leaders were terrified that their recent crushing midterm congressional defeat would be repeated in the coming race for the White House. To blunt the war?s unpopularity, a commission was proposed to measure the crisis and give the president political cover for finding a way out.

The time: January 1968. The war: Vietnam. The president: Lyndon Johnson. Half a million Americans were fighting in Asian jungles, and LBJ was considering requests for hundreds of thousands more. Johnson warned against what some people were calling ?cut and run.? He disdained antiwar Democrats?like his nemesis, Sen. Robert Kennedy of New York?for turning ?on their leader and on their country and on their own fighting men.?

Clip Source: www.msnbc.msn.com

Six years later, besieged by the Iran-contra scandal, Reagan appointed a bipartisan group headed by Texas Republican Sen. John Tower to suggest how to revise White House management to exclude the future possibility of unauthorized covert operations. By promptly accepting the Tower Commission?s wise recommendations and admitting his mistakes, Reagan helped to save his presidency.

One reason the Tower findings were so briskly accepted was the expertise of the commission?s staff director, who knew how important it was for the president to take its report seriously. This was a young lawyer named Stephen Hadley, who has gone on to become President Bush?s national-security adviser. We are now about to see whether Hadley will take the same approach now that he is on the inside of the White House.

The formula for the perfect website

clipped by: minhdang
Clip Source: www.xing.com
Great question, Bengt. I agree that perfect is in the eyes of the browser. What if you deliver content on one site in a number of ways for various preferences?

Bob Bly (bly.com) wrote a book called The Online Copywriters Handbook (McGraw Hill, 2002) and included a section on writing copy to "Fit the Buyers Mood and Intent."

Bly defines various browsing styles along with tips for layout. Heres a selection of Blys advice for reaching browsers with different preferences:

"Artist... text in digestible chunks"
"Writer... list(s) of words" fast downloads
"Explorer... plenty of content"
"Seeker... one-click access to what they want"

For others, see Blys book, which is useful.

Of course, there are other "cornerstones of usability" but Blys approach raises another question: If you design for different browser styles in your attempt to please a broader audience what happens to the concept of "perfect"? In other words, if perfect is possible, is it only possible in the narrowest of niches?

Best,

Howell

Phased withdrawal = Phased Death

clipped by: diodisegno
clippers remarks: Why cant we make the right calls?
Beware the Lure of Phased Withdrawal
Nixon tried it in Vietnam, once most agreed the war was lost, and it cost 20,000 U.S. lives

In his rigidity, Bush sounds eerily like President Lyndon Johnson, who could not acknowledge until too late his Vietnam policy was in shambles. But in the aftermath of the midterm elections, the calls for "phased withdrawal" - coming out of Congress, the Pentagon and the leaky Iraq Study Group - evoke errors of the Nixon years.

In the face of these realities, U.S. officials might have opted to cut losses and bring the troops home. Despite an electoral mandate for peace in the 1968 election, Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger embarked on a gradual withdrawal, which took four years and allowed them to continue the attack. While they tarried, another 20,000 Americans were killed and 100,000 wounded, three Asian nations were devastated and some 1 million to 2 million people perished. For all the ink spilled on the subject of Vietnam, our society has never come to terms with this latter phase of the war. How could we allow so many people to die?

There is no single answer. For any nation, defeat is bitter. There was a belligerent commander-in-chief, a national security adviser whose need for power trumped common sense, a covey of bureaucrats too timid to tell us what they knew, an overblown military incapable of renouncing war, a Congress afraid to cut funds, a distractible public easily tricked.

How odd that in our political culture, an official willing to sacrifice lives for a doomed project is deemed more "realistic" than one who objects. George McGovern, former senator and presidential candidate, is rarely asked for advice.
