"The Pacific,": Powerful WW2 Movie

clipped by: citizenbfk
clippers remarks: I wish I had HBO. The other WW2 movies produced in cooperation between Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are very impressive: Saving Private Ryan, and the Band of Brothers.

Other impressive new generation, war flicks, imo:

Letters from Iwo Jima," produced by Clint Eastwood, was an astounding view of the Pacific War World 2, from the Japanese side.
(and Tora, Tora, Tora, good)

Patton, no doubt.

[Das Boot, a German perspective WW2 flick set on submarines very powerful]

Paths of Glory, about WW1, a heavy-duty flick.

Platoon & Apocalypse Now were powerful films about Vietnam.

Black Hawk Down set in Somalia, leaves an impression.

Hurt Locker, (havent seen), set in Iraq, won Best Picture and Best Director this year.

Gettyburg about the US Civil War powerful, historical. And the PBS documentary about the Civil War incredible.

No American Revolution War flick jumps to mind. Maybe cause wed have to acknowledge the French?

French? - Oh yea: La Gu

HBOs The Pacific is real deal for veterans of World War II

Is it real?

Yes, it was real, so goddamned real that my head darted back to when I was wearing green combat fatigues and carrying my M-1 Garand rifle fighting in the Pacific.

In a sudden rush, I felt all the elements of war - the terror that was so intense you feared your throat would explode from the hard, heavy, unrelenting pounding of the heart.

Glenn Beck Denounces "Born In The USA" as Anti-American

Twenty-six years after the release of Bruce Springsteens hit song, "Born in The USA," conservative talk show host/performance artist Glenn Beck finally got around to listening to the lyrics.

Beck was shocked, shocked to discover that for all these years hed been rocking out to a song about a bitter down-and-out Vietnam vet who has been kicked to the curb by the aforementioned USA.

Do Read It Carefully

clippers remarks: He appears to be one of the few sane person around.

The Taliban have popular support, you have to negotiate with them. The US continues to try to force a military solution to all its Foreign policy issues. The isolationist policy we have had with Cuba certainly has not worked.
Afghanistan is not Vietnam but there are a lot of simularities, a conventional Army fighting a battle against unconventional forces that can blend right in with the population. We could have buried everyone in Afghanistan in silver dollars by now.

Inside Chinas Dog and Cat Meat Markets

clipped by: dcoda
clippers remarks: China is considering banning the eating of dogs and cats as a sign theyre advancing as a civilization.
Clip Source: www.cnn.com

Dogs bark and whine behind high chain-link fences, some of them gnawing the wire so hard they bleed at the mouths while cats packed into crowded cages cower in fear if anyone approaches.

This isnt a pet store -- its a meat market in Guangzhou, a city in southern China where eating cats and dogs is common practice.

But these local restaurants may have to find a new specialty. The Chinese government is considering legislation that would make eating cats and dogs illegal.

Professor Chang Jiwen of the Chinese Academy of the Social Sciences is one of the laws top campaigners. "Cats and dogs are loyal friends to humans," he said. "A ban on eating them would show China has reached a new level of civilization."

Eating dog meat is a long-standing culinary tradition not just in China, but also Korea. Cat meat can be found on the menu in China, Vietnam and even parts of South America.

The man once held as a P.O.W. and tortured after his A4E-SKYHAWK jet was shot down during the Vietnam War has authored a bill entitled, ?S.3081 ? Enemy Belligerent, Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010? which thus far has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill outlines the process by which Americans may be held indefinitely, without notice of their Miranda Rights, and without ever being charged with a crime. Worse detainment of an individual according to the legislation is authorized by mere suspicion that the individual did or seeks to harm any asset of the United States government or any civilian target.

the Central Authority on the Hill seeks to obtain the ?legal? authority to label Americans with vague sounding titles such as ?Unprivileged Enemy Belligerent? and ?High Value Detainee? thereby denying ?We the People? our right to Habeas Corpus solely based upon mere suspicion.

This measure, if passed, would be devastating to young Arizonans attempting to work their way through college as they face huge tuition and fee increases and even worse for those students entering the workforce immediately after high school.

What, it?s not enough for the corporations to have harnessed the Third World for cheap labor, now they want to enslave American youth?

We stormed the administration building & found the documents?the letters from wealthy benefactors & alumni

clipped by: sillymickel
clippers remarks: Karen, agreed. I think the Vietnam War protests just brought the suppression/repression out in the open. They actually fired professors on my campus, not because they were radical or speaking out against the war, but because they were cutting back departments that had anything to do with the Humanities " even the social sciences, religious studies!!!?anything that involved encouraging students to be independent thinkers or to learn anything different from the elementary and secondary school propaganda we?d been taught before.

We stormed the administration building and found the documents " the letters from wealthy benefactors and alumni insisting on this change or they would stop their funding. This was a concerted effort by the wealthy elite that hit all the liberal arts institutions/universities in America. We demanded the Dean appear on the steps of the Administration building and answer to the charges and respond about the documents, as a condition of us leaving the buildin

Translation: we are going to get these kids in the lifelong habit of working their asses off for scraps.

Socialism at its heart is simply the commitment not to leave any member of society behind. Laid bare, capitalism allows the strongest and most conniving to leave the maximum number of their fellow citizens not just behind, but battered and broken.

It is cruelly ironic that a country which takes such great pride in being a predominately Christian nation has at its core an economic system which is the antithesis of the teachings of Jesus.

Also ironic is the fact that a nation which revels in the belief that these same soldiers that are being sent halfway around the world to wreak the mayhem of U.S. Empire, are doing so purportedly to protect our freedoms. Yet the very freedom of speech, they are allegedly protecting, does not allow for the public airing of a rational debate on the pros and cons of socialism and capitalism.

the only hopes for change are nonviolent mobilization and demands made from outside the elite-controlled electoral process.

Music & Fun at the White House

clipped by: citizenbfk
clippers remarks: I read today that Jay-Z and Beyonce visited the White House this week; pretty big Number One celebrities right now.

Last month two Oldies but Goldies, Bob Dylan and Clint Eastwood were there getting awards, smiling and shaking the Presidents hand.

Awards too for an opera singer. An award for the architect who did the Vietnam Vet Memorial and others from a rich diversity of talent and interests.

I dont think these events got much notice -- our corrosive and toxic media thrives more on bad news and criticisms -- but the pic here in this clip -- this is much more of whats real, whats going on and whats good in the USA.

The vampires who want blood and those who feed on hate will more and more start feeding on themselves. The positive and progress will keep on marching on.

Phil Town

clipped by: getmotivated1
clippers remarks: An ex-Green Beret and former river guide, Phil Town is a self-made millionaire several times over and Americas most widely sought-after speaker on investing.

Phil-Town-river-guide Phil Town is the classic Everyman, albeit one whose education and resources were more limited than most.

An average high school student, he completed college on his fourth try. Of his early working years, he says he "mostly got dirty for a living", taking on jobs such as digging ditches and pumping gas. Phil Town spent three and a half years in the Army, returned from the Vietnam War and found a job in the States as a river guide.

Drifting through California, Utah, and Idaho, he subsisted at poverty level, combining his wages from the guiding season and unemployment. He wore black leathers, sported a goatee, lived in a teepee in the woods near Flagstaff, Arizona, and "drove around in a really loud black Harley Davidson".

In the early 80s, Phil Towns life changed radically. He was guiding trustees from the educational program Outward Bound down the nastiest rapid on the Grand Canyons Colorado River, when his split-second decisions saved a boatload of people from a whitewater disaster.

Looks Like Freedom: Amazing Newsweek Photos from the Streets of Baghdad in 2010

clippers remarks: Never thought Id be using the word "Amazing" and "Newsweek" in the same sentence.

And liberals, it would be great to capture Osama bin Laden, but giving him a plea bargain so he?ll testify against the real terrorist, George W. Bush, probably won?t go over as well as you expect, kind of like Iraq. Iraq didnt go as well as you expected either. Saddam and his cronies arent there killing and raping any longer.

I guess Ill never understand what the Left has against freedom, but I could care less what they think anyway. And thankfully and most importantly, neither did George Bush.
