Nevertheless, the chemical companies continued to produce it in this manner. The U.S. government and the chemical companies also knew that the Bionetics Study, commissioned by the government in 1963, showed that even low levels of Dioxin produced significant deformities in unborn offspring of laboratory animals. But they suppressed that study and continued to spray Vietnam with Agent Orange. It wasn?t until the study was leaked in 1969 that the spraying of Agent Orange was discontinued. From 1961 to 1971, the U.S. military sprayed Vietnam with Agent Orange, which contained large quantities of Dioxin, in order to defoliate the trees for military objectives. Dioxin is one of the most dangerous chemicals known to man. It has been recognized by the World Health Organization as a carcinogen (causes cancer) and by the American Academy of Medicine as a teratogen (causes birth defects). Between 2.5 and 4.8 million people were exposed to Agent Orange. approximately 12 percent of the land area of Vietnam - were sprayed. An estimated 3 million Vietnamese people were killed in the war, which also claimed 58,000 American lives. For many other Vietnamese and U.S. veterans and their families, the war continues to take its toll. Our government must know that it cannot continue to use weapons that target and harm civilians. Indeed, the U.S. military is using depleted uranium in Iraq and Afghanistan, which will poison those countries for incalculable decades. Global proved oil reserves fell last year, the first drop since 1998, led by declines in Russia, Norway and China, according to BP Plc. Including Canadian oil sands deposits of 150.7 billion barrels, total global reserves stood at 1.409 trillion barrels, the review said. Saudi Arabia?s reserves, the world?s largest, stood at 264.1 billion barrels, little changed from 264.2 billion a year earlier, BP said. The Middle East as a whole holds 754.1 billion barrels, compared with 755 billion barrels last year. The world has enough reserves for 42 years at current production rates, BP said. ?Declines in Russia, Norway, China and other countries offset increases in Vietnam, India and Egypt,? BP said on its Web site. BP made an upward revision to 2007?s global oil reserves of 23.1 billion barrels, with the largest increases in OPEC members Venezuela and Angola. Members of the Laredo city council, in Mexico, have raised concerns and called on president Felipe Calderon to intervene. Mexican officials are worried that the herbicide imazapyr could threaten the Nuevo Laredo water supply. US border patrol and Environmental Protection Agency officials say the herbicide planned for the test is safe for animals. The programme is intended to keep border patrol agents safe and make their jobs easier. Imazapyr was registered in the US in 1984. The EPA concluded after tests that "there is a reasonable certainty that no harm will result to the general population, and to infants and children from aggregate exposure to imazapyr residues". Jay Johnson-Castro Sr, executive director of the Rio Grande International Study, said he has no issue with removing the cane, just the method. Critics blast US border patrols herbicide strategyPlan would eliminate dense foliage used as hiding places by illegal immigrants and smugglers  Some opponents of the action compare it to the Vietnam war-era Agent Orange chemical spraying programme. "We dont believe that is even moral," said Jay Johnson-Castro Sr, executive director of the Rio Grande International Study Centre, located at Laredo Community College, adjacent to the planned test area. "It is unprecedented that theyd do it in a populated area." One method calls for the cane to be cut by hand and the stumps painted with the herbicide. Another involves using mechanical equipment to dig the cane out by the roots, possibly without the need for the herbicide. The third and most controversial removal method calls for using helicopters to spray imazapyr directly on the cane, until all plant life in the area is poisoned. My father fought in the Vietnam War. during the firefight, a soldier in the squad took a bullet to the lower stomach and was bleeding fast. All my father could do was hold his friend and provided what comfort he could as he died in his arms. So the answer to my dad is no But let me ask you this, Dad: How many nine year old boys have you held in your arms, crying for their father?
