Vietnam experiences a "quiet" sexual revolution

clipped by: wiccantexan

HO CHI MINH CITY (Reuters) - A young woman lives with her boyfriend but hides it from her family, girls write blogs about love and relationships and couples seeking privacy cuddle in public parks at nightfall.

A "quiet" sexual revolution is unfolding in Vietnam, an intensely family-oriented society that holds strong traditions of women being married by their mid-20s and having children.

Young people are dating more before marriage, having pre-marital sex, and have more outlets through the Internet to talk about the joys and problems of relationships than previous generations.

Why the Democrats cant stop the Iraq war

This would warrant the claim that the Iraqis lack the will to engage in useful nation building and thus the failure is theirs not ours.Bush cannot accept this proposal because Bush knows that the Democrats will claim forever that he and the party that supported him got us into an unwinnable war."

Sen. Aikman once famously said of the war in Vietnam that we should just declare that we have won and leave. Why the hell not?

The lesson of Vietnam was that we shouldnt get into foreign wars in which you can not tell the enemy from the good guys and where the enemy can melt into sanctuaries in the jungle or desert sands or wherever, sanctuaries which they can use for R & R and resupply.

The problem is that Iraq turned out to be not only just like Vietnam in that enemy and friend look alike and that the bad guys were able to melt into the cities and desert just as the Vietnamese melted into the jungles, but was even worse in that there was an unseen potential for serious sectarian violence. This has turned into an unwinnable war. Too bad Bush didnt order our troops to leave after he proclaimed "Mission Accomplished." That way the US could have had a victory.

Democrats are trying to stop the war

the proposal that we set firm benchmarks for the Iraqi government to meet on certain dates.

Right now we dont know who were fighting, and we dont know why they are fighting us. Until we can understand these two questions, there is no way we can begin to answer the question of how to eventually end this war. Unfortunately, no presidential candidate is even asking these questions, which to me signifies that they do not have an Iraq strategy and are not interested in developing one. Thats a shame.

The Democrats who compare this war to Vietnam should remember another part of that analogy: Nixon took and held his office on promises to get us out of Vietnam, but with no new ideas about the conflict, he only got us in deeper. This could happen to the Democrats as well if they arent careful.

BAGHDAD: Staff Sergeant David Safstrom does not regret his previous tours in Iraq, not even a difficult second stint when two comrades were killed while trying to capture insurgents.

"In Mosul, in 2003, it felt like we were making the city a better place," he said. "There was no sectarian violence, Saddam was gone, we were tracking down the bad guys. It felt awesome."

But now on his third deployment in Iraq, he is no longer a believer in the mission. The pivotal moment came, he says, this past February when soldiers killed a man setting a roadside bomb. When they searched the bombers body, they found identification showing him to be a sergeant in the Iraqi Army.

"I thought, What are we doing here? Why are we still here? " said Safstrom, a member of Delta Company of the 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry, 82nd Airborne Division. "Were helping guys that are trying to kill us. We help them in the day. They turn around at night and try to kill us."

Scientists find bird flu antibody

Antibodies that could protect against bird flu in humans have been isolated by an international team of scientists.

The discovery could lead to treatments that complement flu vaccines in the event of a human epidemic of the virus.

But scientists working in Switzerland, Vietnam and the United States say they have isolated antibodies that they hope could offer protection against several different strains of the virus simultaneously.

Professor Antonio Lanzavecchia, at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine in Switzerland, says the antibodies have already proven effective in the lab and in mice and he is confident that they could be used in humans.

"We in a way exploit the immune response of an individual who has been infected and has survived the infection and of course has made antibodies that neutralise these viruses," he said.

Iraq is more than just an election issue!

clippers remarks: At this point we really should be asking ourselves: what is the real objective of the Bush administration? Is he actually trying to win the war? Or simply trying to keep it going until he is out of office?

Isnt the troop surge perfect evidence of this? The new strategy amounts to nothing more than simply committing more men and material to the problem without a significant re-evaluation of our overall strategy, or its shortcomings.

Unfortunately, the impractical Democrat bill on spending, and their quick retreat from that position also seems to suggest that many Democrats think that an ongoing war in Iraq might be a convenient election issue next year.

I will vote for no candidate who plays politics while peoples lives are on the line.

WASHINGTON: For me, the saddest spot in Washington is the inverted V of the black granite Vietnam wall, jutting up with the names of young men dying in a war that their leaders already knew could not be won. So many died because of ego and deceit - because LBJ and Robert McNamara wanted to save face or because Henry Kissinger wanted to protect Nixons re-election chances.

Now the Bush administration finds itself at that same hour of shame. It knows the surge is not working. Iraq is in a civil war, with a gruesome bonus of terrorists mixed in. April was the worst month this year for the American military, with 104 soldiers killed, and there have been about 90 killed thus far in May. The democracy is not jelling, as Iraqi lawmakers get ready to slouch off for a two-month vacation, leaving our kids to be blown up.

An official party will leave from Sydney for Vietnam today to bring home the remains of two Australian soldiers declared missing in action in 1965.

Lance Corporal Richard Parker and Private Peter Gillson were serving in South Vietnam when they were struck by enemy machine gun fire.

Their bodies were only recently discovered in a grave north of Ho Chi Minh City.

Assistant Defence Minister Bruce Billson says Australia has a moral duty to see the soldiers are properly laid to rest.

"They served with great gallantry. They gave their lives in the service of the nation and the nation must never forget that," he said.

"Ill be joined by Private Gillsons son, who was an infant at the time his dad lost his life," he said.

"Private Gillsons son didnt have a focal point for his grieving, this is a part of his life story that has been a void for 42 years, now were able to bring that aspect to a close for him."

Scientists Find Endangered Monkeys In Vietnam

clipped by: dorine1722

Science Daily ? A team of scientists from WWF and Conservation International (CI) has discovered the world?s largest known population of grey-shanked doucs (Pygathrix cinerea), increasing chances that the Endangered monkey can be saved from extinction.

The grey-shanked douc is one of the world?s 25 most endangered primates and has only been recorded in the five central Vietnamese provinces of Quang Nam, Kon Tum, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, and Gia Lai. Fewer than 1,000 individuals are believed to still exist, and until now, only one other population with more than 100 animals was known.

?This is an exciting and important discovery because of the large size of the population,?

?It?s very rare to discover a population of this size with such high numbers in a small area, especially for a species on the brink of extinction. This indicates that the population has not been impacted by hunting like all other known populations of the species.?

For the last 35 years Ive watched men complain that, unlike their fathers who fought in "the Good War" against the Third Reich, they didnt get a chance to show their manly stuff, because Vietnam was a bad war, which they had no choice but to resist. And now they think they can redeem their manhood by letting another generation of young people go fight a "good war" for them in the Middle-East - which they, of course, will be fighting from the same distance they fought the "bad war" from.

National Guard always denied order to fire

The command, as Alan Canfora heard it on a 37-year-old audio recording recently discovered in a government archive, appeared to leave no room for doubt. "Right here. Get set. Point. Fire." Then came 13 seconds of gunfire. When it ended, four students were dead and nine injured, and the shootings at Kent State University became engraved in Americas collective memory as one of the most painful days of the Vietnam era.

Yesterday, Mr Canfora, who was among the nine students wounded on that day, demanded a new investigation into the shootings at Kent State in Ohio, saying it was time to settle conclusively what led the contingent of National Guard troops to open fire on unarmed student protesters.

How to win wars against guerillas

clipped by: oscarrob
clippers remarks: If we were smart, this is how we would prosecute our war in Iraq and Afghanistan with all our troops. This is the only way that a guerrilla war can be won. Guerrilla wars, which is what these are, are won by winning the hearts and minds of the population. Mao proved it, Vietnam proved it, and it is being proved in Afghanistan and Iraq. Why we dont recognize it, except sporadically as a "risky strategy," is beyond me.

Its an intimate style of warfare and, for the Americans, a brutal one. They go weeks without showers or decent food. They live every day exposed to enemy fire, and it has cost them dearly. Over the past year, 1-32 has lost 19 men, almost half of the deaths in the entire 5,000-man brigade.

The Americans and their Afghan National Army allies live among the people on the valley floor, while the insurgents -- Taliban, al Qaeda and other fighters of various stripes -- are up in the steep, rocky ridges. When the insurgents attack, they fire down on American soldiers and Afghan civilians alike. "The semiotics of it are great," says Lt. Col. Chris Cavoli, commander of 1-32, a unit of the 10th Mountain Division. "You cant buy press like that. The way the fight is constructed is to deliver one message: Were here to protect you, and the bad guys are here to ruin your lives."

US Veterans High Suicide Risk

clipped by: nohobot

Vietnam war veterans were included in the survey
US war veterans are twice as likely to commit suicide than ordinary civilians, a study has found.

Men who were white, better educated and older than the other men appeared to be at higher risk, as did those with a physical or emotional disability.

The research, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, included men who had served in World War Two, the Vietnam war, the Korean War and the Gulf war.

It said the rate of suicide among men who had taken military service was 2.13 times higher than those who had never served in the armed forces.

War veterans were also twice as likely to use a firearm to kill themselves, it said.

Disabled veterans, or those who had experienced emotional or psychological trauma during their service were identified as the highest risk group.

Interestingly, overweight veterans were less likely to have committed suicide than those of normal weight, the study found.

Tape reveals order to shoot Vietnam protestors

37-year-old recording of Kent State killings found
National Guard always denied order to fire

Listen to the order to shoot given by the Ohio National Guard

40 year old bullet removed from Vietnam mans heart

clipped by: vavee

HANOI, VIETNAM -- A Vietnamese soldier who was shot by U.S. troops in 1968 and has lived with a bullet lodged in his heart since then underwent surgery, and the slug was removed, doctors said Monday.

Le Dinh Hung, 60, underwent surgery Friday and is recovering quickly, said Dr. Nguyen Sinh Hien, who spent three hours operating on Hung at Hanoi Heart Hospital.

"It is the strangest case that I have ever seen," Hien said. "Normally a person with a bullet in his heart would die immediately if they didnt have surgery right away."
