During the Vietnam War, tiny Laos became the most bombed country on Earth. Three decades later, its people are still living with the bombs left behind. Bomb garden: Vegetables grow from a half empty U.S. bombshell at the home of a family in the village of Na Phat. In 1964, the United States launched what became a nine-year series of airstrikes in Laos. The operation was aimed at stopping the Viet Cong, but by the end, a total of 1.9 million tons of bombs were dropped on the country of less than 4 million people.

Military spending marches onclipped by: nzclipfreakClip Source: www.dw-world.de The positive outlook for ridding the world of chemical weapons stands in stark contrast to overall military spending. Globally, military spending grew 45 percent in the past decade, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said Monday. Military spending grew six percent in 2007 year alone, according to SIPRIs annual report. In 2007, 1.3 trillion dollars (851 billion euros) was spent on arms and other military expenditure, with the United States spending by far the most. The human toll caused by chemical warfare has been well documented in conflicts such as World War I, Vietnam and the Iran-Iraq war. The dangerous weapons have been outlawed since 1997, when the multilateral Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) entered into force. Strict timelines have since been set for destroying existing chemical weapons. The 2012 deadline is fast approaching refused to sign the Chemical Weapons Convention. Democrats jumped on Senator McCains response to a request to estimate when US troops would be withdrawn from Iraq. "Thats not too important," Senator McCain said yesterday. "Whats important is the casualties in Iraq." Senator Obamas leading foreign policy spokesman, Vietnam veteran John Kerry, described Senator McCains comments as "unbelievably out of touch, and inconsistent with the needs and concerns of Americans and particularly the families of the troops who are over there". In addition to his most notable legacy --the infamous uniform changes that were immediately repealed when he retired-- McPeak was the man who dissolved Strategic Air Command. We were reassigned to 8th Air Force under his new Air Combat Command, and with the abolishment of SAC went many of the long standing regulations that guided the control and transport of nuclear weapons. It was only a matter of time before the Air Force suffered an embarassing nuclear incident. McPeaks name is still a dirty word in many military circles. He was a deeply unpopular Chief of Staff (October 1990 - October 1994) --though he was, by all accounts, a phenomenal fighter pilot and a real hero of the Vietnam War. The Gates purge was very new-war, very 21st century. McPeaks changes, though originally configured for the Cold War, never really had a place in any century. Clip Source: www.weeklystandard.com A note from a recently retired Air Force reader: Believe it or not, the recent SNAFU with the Air Forces strategic assets can be traced directly back to Barack Obamas military advisor General Merrill McPeak. The changes that McPeak set in motion 15 years ago eventually came back to bite the USAF in the a$$. I have heard General McPeaks name floated as a possible candidate for SECDEF if Obama wins the election. May God have mercy on the US Armed Forces (not just the Air Force) if thats the case. His tenure as Chief was nothing short of disastrous. Imagine the damage he could do at the helm of the ENTIRE military. McPeak stovepiped the promotion line so that fighter pilots were funneled up the ranks above all other [career fields]. Career nuclear weapons officers, once the men who ran the Air Force, now found little room for their expertise in the elite circles of Air Force command. Being the least known potential veep, it shouldnt be surprising that the vetters have to spend more time on him in their various conversations on the Hill. But the fact that hes being, um, added to the very long short list, is an interesting development. Besides Jones, the other names on the list bandied about with congressional Dems include (and not in any order): Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, John Edwards, Evan Bayh, Kathleen Sebelius, Ted Strickland, Mark Warner, Tim Kaine, Jim Webb, Bill Nelson, Jack Reed, Joe Biden, Chris Dodd, Tom Daschle, and Sam Nunn. Youll notice a few names NOT on this list (thats not my exclusion -- hint hint). Besides Jones, Im told the two other names that invited extended discussion were Biden and Strickland. Take this chatter for what it is -- chatter. But first, the bad news. The bad news is that this hopeful story -- one that illustrates a constructive and effective direct action for change -- was reported only in the Bangor Daily News. Period. The good news, which that paper reported on April 30, is that six peace activists were acquitted on charges of criminal trespass for failing to obey a police request that they abandon their sit-in outside U.S. Sen. Susan Collins office in the Margaret Chase Smith Federal Building in Maine. The defendants, Doug Rawlings, Henry Braun, Jimmy Freeman, Dud Hendrick, Rob Shetterly and Jonathan Kreps -- dubbed the Bangor Six -- were arrested in March 2007 for protesting Bu Clip Source: www.alternet.org The stink leaking out of Ira Katzs office at the Veterans Affairs just doesnt stop. Every day some callous new email shows how little he cares that the stunning statistics about soldier and veteran suicides he is trying to suppress represent real lives that were his responsibility; some flat-footed attempt is made to convince Congress -- again -- that he didnt mean to "mislead." As the widow of a Vietnam vet who took his own life after coming home, all the skulduggery and frightening indifference that agents of this government have exhibited in its attempt to keep it all out of sight has been particularly hard to take. But even given my deep personal connection to these stories, Im finding it increasingly difficult to sustain an appropriately high-decibel level of outrage. I am so very tired of it all. A little good news would go a long way.

Perhaps 200 more war dodgers are living in the country unannounced, waiting to see how Canada will ultimately declare itself, the War Resisters Support Campaign says.

OBAMA CALLED HILLARY TWICE... AND GOT VOICEMAILclipped by: reimersClip Source: www.nypost.com Obamas victory will be made official with the vote of delegates at the Democratic convention in late August. It sets up a race between a 46-year-old opponent of the Iraq war and John McCain, a 71-year-old former Vietnam POW and supporter of the current US military mission. In his remarks, Obama complimented Hillary Rodham Clinton and even mentioned her husband, Bill, whos been deeply critical of him. Singling her out for praise for her stance on universal health care and poverty and calling her campaign "barrier-breaking," he said, "Our party and our country are better off because of her, and I am a better candidate for having had the honor to compete with Hillary Rodham Clinton." He tried to call her twice following the speech - but got her voicemail. She finally returned the call as his plane was about to fly out of St. Paul to Washington. He offered to meet with her, but nothing was finalized. Für die Inhalte dieses Feeds ist alleine der jeweilige Autor/Anbieter verantwortlich. Die Inhalte stellen nicht die Meinung von EasyRSS dar. Many of the brain injuries are serious but some of them are akin to what anyone who played football in their youth might have suffered, Peake told Guinn. Guinn wasnt entirely satisfied with the answers. He said its a real issue for returning soldiers as well as their families, and he doesnt think job training is enough. Frankly, Peakes casually dismissive attitude sucks. Being hunted by other humans every day for 15 months, watching your friend bleed to death, and having your brain flattened like a pancake from a thousand-pound detonation are not comparable to football injuries. Clip Source: www.vetvoice.com VA Secretary James Peake continued to show little respect for the service of Americas newest veterans yesterday by dismissing concerns about the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) in troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Speaking alongside Senator Ted Stevens (R-AK) in a remote Alaskan village, Peake first used the word "overblown" when discussing PTSD and TBI and then made a "football" comparison. From the Anchorage Daily News: A Vietnam veteran in Bethel, John Guinn, told Stevens and Peake he was worried about whats going to happen to the village soldiers back from the Middle East.

Bushclipped by: papananookclippers remarks: Not long after that, the President "launched" what an evidently bewildered Sanchez politely describes as "a kind of confused pep talk regarding both Fallujah and our upcoming southern campaign [against the Mahdi Army]." Here then is that "pep talk." While you read it, try to imagine anything like it coming out of the mouth of any other American president, or anything not like it coming out of the mouth of any evil enemy leader in the films of the Presidents -- and my -- childhood: "Kick ass! [Bush] said, echoing Colin Powells tough talk. If somebody tries to stop the march to democracy, we will seek them out and kill them! We must be tougher than hell! This Vietnam stuff, this is not even close. It is a mind-set. We cant send that message. Its an excuse to prepare us for withdrawal. "There is a series of moments and this is one of them. Our will is being tested, but we are resolute. We have a better way. Stay strong! Stay the course! Kill them! Be confident! Prevai Clip Source: www.smirkingchimp.com According to Sanchez, Powell was talking tough that day: "Weve got to smash somebodys ass quickly," the general reports him saying. "There has to be a total victory somewhere. We must have a brute demonstration of power." (And indeed, by the end of April, parts of Fallujah would be in ruins, as, by August, would expanses of the oldest parts of the holy Shiite city of Najaf. Sadr himself would, however, escape to fight another day; and, in order to declare Powells "total victory," the U.S. military would have to return to Fallujah that November, after the U.S. presidential election, and reduce three-quarters of it to virtual rubble.) Bush then turned to the subject of al-Sadr: "At the end of this campaign al-Sadr must be gone," he insisted to his top advisors. "At a minimum, he will be arrested. It is essential he be wiped out."

Anyone who has seen the effects of cluster carpet bombing on innocent civilians - in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, and in the 60s and 70s in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam - cannot help but be horrified. A cluster bomb is a cannister that opens in midair and ejects hundreds of "bomb-lets" across an area of more or less two football fields. These bomb-lets are little metal balls - as powerful as a hand grenade. When these bomb-lets explode, there?s a rain of jagged shrapnel. 78 Million Unexploded Cluster Bombs Still in Loasclipped by: katsteevnsclippers remarks: Go to the source for a short video. During the Vietnam war, the US illegally bombed Laos as part of a secret war to disrupt Vietcong supply routes. 30 years later, 78 million unexploded cluster bombs remain scattered across the country, placing thousands at risk of death or injury every day. 111 countries gathered in Dublin this week to adopt a treaty banning cluster bombs. 5 countries - the US, Russia, Israel, India and Pakistan - were notable in their absence. HERBY: In Laos, they have been everywhere at the time of the war, in the 1960s and 70s, in villages. And the place was basically uninhabitable because of the degree of weapons contamination and, mainly, cluster munition contamination.
