This is a newly discovered species from Vietnam called the vampire flying frog. The "flying" part is because it can glide from tree to tree, using the unusual amount of webbing between its toes.

The other part of the name has nothing to do with the adorable adult in the picture above. Its based on a feature of the tadpoles that the original paper delicately calls "a pair of keratinized hooks on the lower labium that face away from the mouth." That is, this baby has FANGS:

Israel - The mad dog in the Middle-East.

clipped by: beanz

In the words of late General Moshe Dayan, who went on to become Israel?s defense minister, and later foreign minister, Israel?s security depended on its being viewed by others as a mad dog.

Dr Sabrosky, who has been calling for a new investigation on 9/11 for some time, said in a recent radio interview (March 19), it would have been impossible to stage 9/11 without the full resources of both the CIA and Mossad. Nine-eleven, he said, served the interests of both the agencies. ?They did 9/11. They did it.?

Alan Sabrosky (Ph.D, university of Michigan) is a ten year US Marine Corps veteran. A Vietnam war vet. An American of Jewish ancestry. He?s not only a graduate of the US Army War College, he was director of studies there. For five and a half years.

? While asking Dr Sabrosky what he thinks is going to happen, Glenn says he himself thinks that Israel is going to pull off another 9-11, ?sooner than any of us realize or would like to envision.?

8 Ways Monsanto is Destroying Our Health

Lots of talk these days about the bullying of young boys and girls in school by more aggressive students. This brings to my mind the biggest bully of all: the biotech company, Monsanto Corporation. Taken in context, Monsanto?s list of corporate crimes should have been enough to pull their corporate charter years ago. And yet we allow them to continue to destroy our food supply, our health and the planet. Monsanto or Monsatan? Take a look at the company?s track record and decide for yourself.

Agent Orange: Monsanto was the major financial beneficiary of this herbicide used to defoliate the jungles of Vietnam and destroy the health of American troops and their offspring. It also allowed Monsanto and other chemical companies to appeal for and receive protection from veterans seeking damages for their exposure to Agent Orange and any future biotech creations.

Journalist Jeremy Scahill calls the speech "one of the most despicable attempts at revisionist use of Martin Luther King Jr. Ive ever seen."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Right: Jeh C. Johnson

With Martin Luther King, Jr. Day right around the corner, attempts to misuse and/or whitewash his legacy are to be expected, particularly on the right.

But this, from Defense Department General Counsel Jeh Johnson, is brazen even in the annals of misappropriations of King:

WASHINGTON, Jan. 13, 2011 ? If Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were alive today, would he understand why the United States is at war?

In the final year of his life, King became an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War, Johnson told a packed auditorium. However, he added, today?s wars are not out of line with the iconic Nobel Peace Prize winner?s teachings.

?I believe that if Dr. King were alive today, he would recognize that we live in a complicated world, and that our nations military should not and cannot lay down its arms and leave the American people vulnerable to terrorist attack,? he said.

HOW PRIVATIZATION, RELIGION AND CONSTITUTIONAL ABUSES HAVE CREATED A ?SHADOW? STATE

clipped by: foxyarse
clippers remarks: All that remains is a moment or two of video, very inexplicable, Wheeler, the consummate disciplined professional drifting in what seems to be an LSD induced haze. There, the curtain was drawn, the door was closed, no further cover story, no prepared lie, the ?imagineers? responsible for such things caught off balance, this time at least.

John Wheeler was clearly, ?The Man Who Knew Too Much.?

Wheeler was also a ?contractor,? part of the army of private citizens that now control everything that the Department of Homeland Security does not. We call this ?privatization.?
ROGUE AMERICA, THE QUIET MUTINY

HOW PRIVATIZATION, RELIGION AND CONSTITUTIONAL ABUSES  HAVE CREATED A ?SHADOW? STATE

?Forces well outside any political system envisioned by the Founding Fathers control America, forces capable of side-stepping or overruling any elected official or any law, up to and including, even especially, the Constitution of the United States of America.?

A little over 2 weeks ago, John Wheeler III, former Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force, a man whose Washington resume put him in contact with presidents, was found in the back of a garbage truck.  Two weeks later, there is no police investigation, no cause of death, no questions from the press, just silence, deafening silence.

Nothing is said of Wheelers career, a high profile Vietnam veteran, a man much admired, even loved.  Work, bio-chem warfare, nuclear programs, now totally blacked out.

10,000 Cattle Dead In Vietnam: Cows, Buffalo Part Of Mass Die-Off

clipped by: nchnted
clippers remarks: Its starting to get strange - no rational explanations and such a wide variety of locales and animals!

Cattle have been dying throughout Vietnam, which has had a particularly intense winter. The northern mountainous province of Cao Bang was hardest hit with 2,260 dead cattle, per Thanh Nien News. Some have said the number of total dead cattle may be as high as 13,000.

Dead Cattle Vietnam

Mass animal deaths have been in the news quite a bit lately. Hundreds of birds were found dead in South Dakota early this week, and before that birds were found dead in Italy and birds fell from the sky in Arkansas, among other incidents.

Some of the mass die-offs have been explained - for instance, indigestion is thought to be the cause in Italy and the U.S. government has admitted involvement in the South Dakota case. But others remain up for debate.

How to avoid duty-free mishaps

clipped by: hotdoge3
clippers remarks: According to Sydney Airports customer-service department, the airports duty-free liquor outlets can provide your liquor in a sealed, tamper-evident bag but they will not do this as a matter of course. You need to advise them at the time of purchase that you will be transiting.

The problem is the lack of uniformity in regulations for carry-on duty-free liquor in airports around the world. If you can do the research, you can find out exactly what regulations apply at the airports youll be transiting through - but you probably have a life to live.

One way around this is to buy your duty-free liquor on board the aircraft on the final leg of your journey or at the end of your journey at the airport duty-free shops that are usually open for incoming passengers.

The staff at the security screening point at the boarding gate were only complying with airport policy when they barred you from boarding since your liquor was not in a sealed, tamper-evident bag.

How to avoid duty-free mishaps

Duty-free

PRECIOUS CARGO: Duty-free liquor regulations differ at airports across the world.

I recently travelled to Vietnam on Singapore Airlines. I bought a one-litre bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label at Sydney Airport after going through customs. While in transit in Singapore, as I was about to board the plane, the security guard said I couldnt take the Blue Label onto the plane because it was not in a sealed bag.

I explained that I bought it at Sydney Airport and showed him the receipt. He took the bottle from me and I grabbed it back off him - and then I actually dumped the whole bottle in the toilet. Do I have any right to complain? Whatever I buy at Sydney duty-free at the airport is never sealed in a bag.

I feel your pain. Getting your duty-free liquor safely to your destination is a minefield and many travellers have lost out, me included.

At a January 19th meeting in the Oval Office with Chinese president Hu Jintao, Barack Obama expressed his gratitude to the Chinese people for their 9th century invention of gunpowder, without which, he said, the American way of life would not be possible.

"Ever since the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock," he said, "Americans have had a close relationship to gunpowder. Gunpowder fires the guns we use at home and abroad. Surveillance Video of John Wheeler III Surfaces

clipped by: prophetbob
clippers remarks: This came out on Jan. 5th, but is news to me. I wonder if the man was drugged.

WILMINGTON, Del. ? A prominent national defense expert appeared confused and disoriented as he wandered inside a downtown Wilmington office building less than 14 hours before his body was dumped with a load of trash at a nearby landfill, police said Wednesday.

John P. Wheeler III refused help from several people who approached him inside the Nemours Building as late as 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Newark Police Lt. Mark A. Farrall said.

Wheelers body was found Friday morning at the Cherry Island Landfill in Wilmington. Police believe he was killed, but they havent said how or why.

Wheeler, 66, was an Army officer at the Pentagon during the Vietnam War. He served in the administrations of three Republican presidents and helped get the Vietnam War Memorial built.

Wheeler was seen in a similarly disoriented condition in downtown Wilmington Dec. 29, two nights before his body was found.

300 Year Old Food Forest in Vietnam

300 Year Old Food Forest in Vietnam

This is what I think of as a paradise on earth -- a 300 year old food forest in Vietnam. 28 generations have shared in developing this spectacularly lush environment that not only feeds the family, but provides all the medicinal herbs and plants they need.

Imagine growing up in an environment where you just need to walk outside the door and there is all the sustenance you will ever need -- literally provided by your ancestors!

This is an inspiring story that we can be thinking about as we take steps to convert our backyards, front yards and even windowsills into food producing spaces. Can we begin to think about 28 generations from now? What could be more meaningful and important than that?

Explorers discover spectacular caves in Vietnam

For decades, geologists have known that Vietnam is home to some of the worlds most spectacular caves, many of them largely unexplored. Now husband-and-wife cavers have documented perhaps the worlds largest: Hang Son Doong, big enough in places to accommodate a New York City block of skyscrapers.

The cave in the Annamite Mountains contains a river and jungle (its name translates to "mountain river cave") and even its own thin clouds, and its end remains out of sight. Its part of a network of about 150 caves in central Vietnam near the Laotian border.

Cross on federal land is unconstitutional

clipped by: wiccantexan
Clip Source: www.cnn.com
A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that a cross displayed on public property for nearly a century is unconstitutional.

The current 43-foot cross was erected in 1954 in honor of Korean War veterans and has been the subject of near constant judicial back and forth since 1989, when two Vietnam War veterans filed suit against the city, saying it violated the California Constitutions "No Preference" clause.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the notion that the cross -- since the late 1990s surrounded by plaques and paving stones honoring veterans and war dead -- was solely a memorial.

The court also noted that the site had, for most of history, been used for Easter services -- marked on maps until the late 1980s as the "Mount Soledad Easter Cross" -- and was designated a war memorial with a plaque "only after the legal controversy began in the late 1980s."

Michael Savage on Mysterious Assassination of John Wheeler III

clipped by: merrie
clippers remarks: Detectives were able to verify that Wheeler had been seen Thursday near 10th and Orange Streets - close to the Hotel du Pont - but a police spokesman declined to say how this was confirmed. An executive at the nearby DuPont Corp. headquarters, which employs outdoor surveillance cameras, said that the company had "cooperated" with the police but declined to elaborate.

"Were working a lot of leads," [said Newark police spokesman Mark A. Farrall.]

Farrall has said that Wheeler died shortly before his body was discovered Friday, but has not described how Wheeler died - whether, for example, his death was caused by gunshot, bludgeoning, or some other violent act.

An official cause of death will not be released until "toxicology reports and other forensic studies" are completed, said Carl Kanefsky, a spokesman for the medical examiner.

"Its quite a mystery, and the length of time its taking to solve it makes it more intriguing," said Bayard Marin ...

Wheeler was found dead in a landfill on Friday, and the police have trying to retrace his movements between Dec. 28 and then.

On Tuesday, police said a witness had come forward to say that Wheeler had been spotted alive in downtown Wilmington on Thursday afternoon. That is less than 24 hours before his body was found in a Wilmington landfill in refuse that came from trash bins in one of 10 possible locations in Newark, Del.

A Vietnam veteran who became a driving force behind the controversial memorial on the National Mall, Wheeler worked on nuclear, chemical, and cyber issues at the Pentagon. He was the first chief executive officer of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, a secretary of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and a tireless advocate for veterans.

The case has drawn national attention - Newark police received roughly 70 media calls Tuesday - because Wheeler, 66, lived such a distinguished public life.

Vampire flying frog found in Vietnam

The frog uses its webbed toes to glide between treetops (Australian Museum: Jodi Rowley)

An Australian scientist has discovered an unusual species of frog in southern Vietnam.

The vampire flying frog uses its webbed toes to glide between treetops.

But it earned its nickname because the frogs tadpoles have strange black fangs.

Australian Museum scientist Dr Jodi Rowley, who found the frog, says it is the first time fangs have been discovered in a tadpole.

"We dont know of anything quite like this thats for sure, so were taking a lot of time to work out why on Earth they have these fangs," Dr Rowley said.

"Maybe its got something to do with what they eat.

"They breed in very small pools of water that are found in the holes in the trunks of trees, so maybe they eat something particularly strange up there."

EX ARMY MAN FEELS FOR THE TROOPS STUCK IN WARZONES

Chuck Donabedian knows how it feels for a soldier who is out there lonely and all by himself, secluded. There is no barrier between him and death. He is at once a killer and a victim. The sheer torture of being in an environment of violence and hatred is simply inexplicable. Chuck was himself a soldier once, a Vietnam War veteran who saw the face of death from close corners. A good forty five years ago he was himself a part of a secret squad named DET 3, 3rd Radio Research Unit that was stationed in the chaotic jungles of Vietnam.

FACT CHECK: Mass bird, fish deaths occur regularly

clipped by: JackieDel
clippers remarks: Since the 1970s, the U.S. Geological Surveys National Wildlife Health Center in Wisconsin has tracked mass deaths among birds, fish and other critters, said wildlife disease specialist LeAnn White. At times the sky and the streams just turn deadly. Sometimes its disease, sometimes pollution. Other times its just a mystery.

In the past eight months, the USGS has logged 95 mass wildlife die-offs in North America and thats probably a dramatic undercount, White said. The list includes 900 some turkey vultures that seemed to drown and starve in the Florida Keys, 4,300 ducks killed by parasites in Minnesota, 1,500 salamanders done in by a virus in Idaho, 2,000 bats that died of rabies in Texas, and the still mysterious death of 2,750 sea birds in California.

On average, 163 such events are reported to the federal government each year, according to USGS records. And there have been much larger die-offs than the 3,000 blackbirds in Arkansas.
Clip Source: news.yahoo.com

WASHINGTON ? First, the blackbirds fell out of the sky on New Years Eve in Arkansas. In recent days, wildlife have mysteriously died in big numbers: 2 million fish in the Chesapeake Bay, 150 tons of red tilapia in Vietnam, 40,000 crabs in Britain and other places across the world.

Blogs connected the deadly dots, joking about the "aflockalypse" while others saw real signs of something sinister, either biblical or environmental.

The reality, say biologists, is that these mass die-offs happen all the time and usually are unrelated.

Federal records show they happen on average every other day somewhere in North America. Usually, we dont notice them and dont try to link them to each other.

"They generally fly under the radar," said ornithologist John Wiens, chief scientist at the California research institution PRBO Conservation Science.
