The Picasso exhibition runs until January 2011

VIENNA ? More than 200 political works by Pablo Picasso, created after the artist joined the French Communist Party in 1944, will go on exhibition in an Austrian museum from Wednesday.

In "Picasso: Peace and Freedom" at Viennas Albertina museum, the Spanish-born painter and sculptor reflects on a politically turbulent time from 1944 until his death in 1973 -- including Francisco Francos dictatorship and the wars in Algeria, Vietnam and Korea.

"Burning a Quran may be wrong, but its a right"

clipped by: wiccantexan
Clip Source: www.cnn.com
A Florida pastor who canceled plans for his congregation to burn Qurans on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks had the right to follow through with his intentions, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer said Wednesday.

In an interview Wednesday on CNNs "Larry King Live," the associate justice compared the act of burning Islams holy book to setting the American on flag on fire when asked whether the Rev. Terry Jones had the right to carry out the controversial plan.

"We protect expression that we hate," he said. "When you have a country of 300 million different people who think different things, it is helpful. It is helpful to tell everyone, You can think what you want."

Breyer, who served in the Army, acknowledged that witnessing an American flag being burned during the Vietnam War era triggered "a physical reaction of repulsion" in him. But, he added, free speech applies equally to popular and unpopular statements.

Living in the USA: We Have Been Advised to Stop Mocking the Tea Party

clipped by: zizzy
clippers remarks: I mock the Tea Party because the members deserve all the derision that can be mustered. But I have always taken them seriously as an arm of powerful fascists. The Left needs to get tough, otherwise, these freaks will do away with the 14th Amendment, which is the bedrock of Civil Rights.

It?s time to stop mocking the Tea Party.

Whether they are loons, principled conservatives, or a mix of both, they are a potent force that won?t be intimidated off the national stage by snarky media coverage and clueless attacks from the establishment.

Article - Powers Tea Party

Every Tea Party candidate has been described as being crazy, stupid, and on track to destroy America if they are elected. Funny, that?s pretty much what was said about Barry Goldwater and his followers.

But in his heyday, Goldwater was decried by Democrats and liberal Republicans alike as a dangerous demagogue, who would lead the U.S. into nuclear war, eliminate Social Security, and roll back civil-rights progress. He once advocated giving battlefield commanders in Vietnam the authority to use nuclear weapons.

Demands were made that he disavow his ?racist? and ?extremist? followers.

Sound familiar?

As in nature, politics abhors a vacuum. Without a strong voice for more moderate leadership, the Tea Party is filling that vacuum.

Colin Powell turns on Obama

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president in 2008 despite serving three Republican presidents, said Sunday that Obama needs to change his approach in the White House because voters are feeling overwhelmed by sweeping new laws that expand the scope of government.

?The president also has to ... shift the way in which he has been doing things,? Powell said on NBC?s ?Meet the Press.? ?The American people feel that too many programs have come down. There are so many rocks in our knapsack now that we?re having trouble carrying it.?

Powell?s critique is noteworthy, given his decision in the 2008 election to spurn Republican John McCain ? a fellow Vietnam veteran and personal friend ? to back Obama, whom he described as offering ?generational change.? The president has continued to consult with Powell in the White House.

Is Ours The Weakest Generation?

clipped by: merrie
clippers remarks: inevitable IED by the side of the road -- or signs that youve rolled right into an ambush by heavily-armed insurgents equipped with Iranian RPGs.

You dont have to do any of those things. You just have to vote in November. You just have to take the time to rally your neighbors, your family members and your co-workers to vote for candidates who believe in the Constitution. You must marshal voters who will reject the out-of-control, free-spending government that has brought our country to the edge of bankruptcy.

Because if the Constitution doesnt mean anything, if all of the founders sacrifices went for naught, if all of those American heroes who fought and bled and died for the flag mean nothing, if all your parents and grandparents gave you doesnt amount to a hill of beans, well, then our generation will be forever known as the weak-willed group that let the American dream slip from our fingers.

Polish soldiers on trial for killing Afghan civilians

clipped by: foxyarse
clippers remarks: "The last such case to have found its way to court was probably in relation to US Army activities in Vietnam."

The incident occurred after the Polish soldiers came under fire from Taliban forces, and one Polish vehicle was hit in the exchange.

Prosecutors say the situation later calmed down enough for the soldiers to begin cooking a meal. In the meantime, one group began firing on the village with machine guns and then threw grenades, prosecutors said.

Six people died in the shooting, including two women, three children and a man getting ready for his wedding, reported the Polish Press Agency PAP. Three other persons were wounded.

The soldiers claim they misfired because of faulty mortar and ammunition.

Six of them are accused of killing civilians and face up to life in jail. The seventh faces charges of firing into an undefended object, and faces up to 15 years in jail, PAP reported.

Polish soldiers on trial for killing Afghan civilians

Warsaw - Seven Polish soldiers accused of killing Afghan civilians took the stand on Tuesday in what was the first trial in Polish history on violating the Hague and Geneva conventions. The court ruled to close the proceedings off to the media, saying it could lead to "dramatization" of the case and that the hall was too small to hold journalists.

Prosecutors claim to have strong evidence that the soldiers unlawfully killed civilians in the Afghan village of Nangar Khel in August 2007. They say the villagers posed no threat and the soldiers knowingly fired into building that contained civilians.

"Its a unique trial, not only in Poland but also in Europe or even in the world," a court spokesman told the daily Gazeta Wyborcza

Israeli Rabbi Outdoes Ahmadinejad

clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken
clippers remarks: It is interesting that Haaretz felt it necessary to add that Netanyahu?s comments ?stopped short of a condemnation.?

It appears that we live in a world permeated with double standards. Even while claiming adherence to ?universal? sets of ethical teaching (such as the Ten Commandments), we regularly accept and/or excuse behavior by blood relatives that we would condemn when practiced by those to whom we are unrelated.

What is terrorism? It is something the ?other? does, not us. Where is mass murder committed? It is in Rwanda, in Darfur, in Bosnia, but not in Iraq or Vietnam or Nicaragua. Who are the torturers? Not us. President Bush told us that water-boarding does not count, and those that wrote the memos saying ?intensive interrogation? was legal while international law was obsolete, now teach at our most prestigious universities. We are good. They are bad. We deserve to live. They deserve to die.

It appears that we live in a world permeated with double standards.

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef

Back in October of 2005 the Western media, starting with the New York Times, mistranslated a speech by Ahmadinejad.

Ahmadinejad?s statement that ?the occupying regime over Jerusalem? will one day ?vanish from the pages of time? somehow became a desire that Israel should be ?wiped off the the map.?

Now let us fast forward to August 29, 2010. On that day the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on a speech made by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the spiritual leader the Israeli political party, Shas. Shas is a major political movement in Israel.

Rabbi Yosef said that the Palestinians and their leaders are ?evil and damnable.? That ?God should strike them with a plague.? And just in case God doesn?t get them all, Israel ?must send missiles to them and annihilate them.? He finished up with ?Abu Mazen (aka Mahmoud Abbas) and all these evil people should perish from this world.? One is tempted to ask if the spiritual leader of Shas was trying to mimic the New York Times distorted image of Ahmadinejad?

Vietnam Veterans Want CIA Sanctioned

clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken
clippers remarks: http://www.courthousenews.com/2010/08/27/VetsvCIA.pdf

The Vietnam Veterans of America asked a federal judge to impose sanctions on the Central Intelligence Agency, for failing to produce documents on the CIAs testing of hundreds of kinds of drugs - including sarin and phosgene nerve gas and LSD - on thousands of soldiers.

The Vietnam Veterans of America sued the CIA in January 2009, claiming the agency had experimented on soldiers

testing the effects of mind-controlling drugs.

The underlying federal complaint claims that at least 7,800 soldiers were subjected to "at least 250, but as many as 400 chemical and biological agents."

This original complaint, filed in January 2009, claimed that "this vast program of human experimentation, shrouded in secrecy," was done without informed consent of the soldier-guinea pigs. "In 1970, defendants provided Congress with an alphabetical list showing that they had tested 145 drugs during Projects Bluebird, Artichoke, MKULTRA and MKDELTA."

Oral arguments in the case are to begin Sept. 29.

A Faithful Nation

clipped by: debbyski
clippers remarks: "But straight is the path and narrow is the way.

Even the first time around, judging by the reaction, the Gospels were pretty unwelcome news to an awful lot of people.

Taking seriously the actual message of Jesus, though, should serve at least to moderate the greed and violence that mark this culture. Its hard to imagine a con much more audacious than making Christ the front man for a program of tax cuts for the rich or war in Iraq. If some modest part of the 85 percent of us who are Christians woke up to that fact, then the world might change.

It is possible, I think. Yes, the mainline Protestant churches that supported civil rights and opposed the war in Vietnam are mostly locked in a dreary decline as their congregations dwindle and their elders argue endlessly about gay clergy and same-sex unions.

For Christians, the plainspoken message of the Gospels is clear enough. If you have any doubts, read the Sermon on the Mount."
Clip Source: www.harpers.org
Depending on which poll you look at and how the question is asked, somewhere around 85 percent of us call ourselves Christian.

The question is, what kind of Christian nation?

if the theology makes it harder to love the neighbor a little farther away?particularly the poor and the weak?then its a problem. And the dominant theologies of the moment do just that. They undercut Jesus, muffle his hard words, deaden his call, and in the end silence him.

Privatize Social Security? Keep health care for people who can afford it? File those under ?God helps those who help themselves.?

The power of the Christian right rests largely in the fact that they boldly claim religious authority, and by their very boldness convince the rest of us that they must know what theyre talking about. Theyre like the guy who gives you directions with such loud confidence that you drive on even though the road appears to be turning into a faint, rutted track.
