Germany: `Why NATO should withdraw from Afghanistan`

Why NATO Should Withdraw from Afghanistan

It is difficult for politicians to admit they were wrong. But when it comes to Afghanistan, the consequences of not doing so could be high. It is time for the West to cut its losses and withdraw.

it took 30 years for former US Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara to acknowledge that the Vietnam War had been a mistake.

The German government, NATO and the West shouldnt wait that long.

we are no longer a part of the solution -- increasingly, we have become part of the problem. It is best just to leave now, before additional blood is spilled.

In total, the US, its allies and private security firms have almost 200,000 soldiers stationed in the country, roughly equal to the number the Soviets stationed there in the 1980s

Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger demanded in 1971 that his country should lose the Asian war with dignity.

One can hear similar expressions of desperation these days

My mothers escape from Khmer Rouge

Kaing Guek Eav, better known as Duch, was found guilty of war crimes and sentenced to serve up to 19 more years in prison in what was an open-and-shut case. From the start, Duch, a born-again Christian, fully admitted his leadership role in Phnom Penhs infamous Tuol Sleng, a school-turned-torture center, where more than 14,000 people were killed.

My mom passed away in October at the age of 73 in Northern California. When she was only 39, she had managed to outwit the Khmer Rouge and the Vietnamese communists by escaping Cambodia to Vietnam with five young children, including me.

She was an incredible woman. She grew up in an age and place when women were the property of men, and yet she sought independence. On her home was a sign "Propriété de Madame Lim" (Property of Mrs. Lim).

She decided to take a chance and claim to be Vietnamese. It was a dangerous gamble.

Vietnams forgotten war victims

clipped by: tabsey

The Vietnam war ended 35 years ago, but children are still being born with birth defects from chemical poisoning allegedly caused by defoliants sprayed by the US military [GALLO/GETTY]

When Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, visited Vietnam on Thursday she extolled the countrys "unlimited potential" and strong trade relations with the US. But the words must have rung hollow for Ngyuen Ngoc Phuong, who has seen his potential destroyed by American chemical poisoning.

But the results of that war, which officially ended 35 years ago, affect every aspect of Phuongs life.

The young man has severe physical deformities, and like an estimated three million Vietnamese, he suffers from exposure to Agent Orange, a toxic chemical US forces sprayed during the war to defoliate the dense jungles Viet Cong rebels used for cover

In its manufacture, the chemical was contaminated with TCDD, or dioxin, "the most toxic substance known to humans", according to an investigation in the journal Science.

Sure, he?s the guy who took his three scratches and abandoned his combat command in Vietnam on a technicality, four months into a yearlong tour, then had the audacity to tout that as an example of leadership in a presidential campaign. That actually has been helpful ? it makes a great textbook example of what is not leadership, before you even get to the decades of ineffectual back-benchery. In 2004, the American people agreed, granting George Bush the opportunity to win in Iraq, rather than letting Iraq become another Vietnam.

But Kerry won re-election handily at home in 2008. It?s part of the charm of life in Massachusetts, being represented by mountebanks, poltroons ...

Boston Herald piles on, with New England boat builders wondering why

New England boat builders say shame on Sen. John Kerry for buying a $7 million New Zealand-built luxury yacht while local ship makers struggle to find work.

News that Kerry was docking the 76-foot custom-built sloop in Newport, R.I., was first reported in the Herald Friday

meaning Kerry would owe the state more than $500,000 in excise and sales taxes.

Hang on, who?s this, getting ready to hoist something:

Meanwhile, Howie Carr gets really hurtful about it:

Liveshot Kerry should rename his $7 million sloop ?The Botched Joke.

You remember that was how he tried to explain away his nasty little dig at the military, back in 2006, saying that if kids don?t study hard, they?ll end up in Iraq. He said it was a botched joke. So I wonder how Liveshot is trying to explain this latest botched joke to his ancient gold-digging bride in her $9.2 million mansion on Brant Point in Nantucket.

Taliban Training Monkey Terrorists?

clipped by: tabsey
clippers remarks: Never let the truth get in the way of a good story, as someone said ( and lots have repeated)
Clip Source: news.discovery.com

Monkeys have been trained by the Taliban in Afghanistan to use machine guns and trench mortars against U.S. military forces, reports Peoples Daily Online.

According to this Chinese media story, monkeys can now operate the Kalashnikov, Bren light machine gun, and have the ability to identify and attack U.S. soldiers based on the appearance of their uniforms.

100712_P201006281404501998362253

The report indicates the Taliban was inspired by none other than the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, which it claims used peanuts and bananas to train "monkey soldiers" in Vietnam. This information was, in turn, attributed to a "British media" report from last month.

The story ends by saying, "A senior U.S. military source confirmed the existence of the Taliban monkey soldiers, military experts call armed monkeys monkey terrorists."

So we have a story built on rumor, with no named sources, quoting a media source of unknown origin. Personally, I think a clever monkey could be behind the whole thing.

Paying all sorts of people in country get you dollar supporters who stay on your side as long as they think you are going to stay. Body counts of insurgent leaders killed are always meaningless in judging whether the enemy will or will not bounce back. Not the same war but similar mistakes being made.

A glance at the conflict in Afghanistan

The US Department of Defense has 19 per cent more contractor personnel (207, 600) in Iraq and Afghanistan than uniformed personnel (175,000), according to a recent report from the US Congressional Research Service.

The figures for Afghanistan show that in March this year there were 112,092 contractors working for the DoD. Of these, 16,081 were US citizens and 17,512 were third-country nationals. The rest, 78,499, were Afghan nationals.

US Special Operations Forces (SOF).

US military officials have said that SOF raids have killed or captured 186 insurgent leaders and detained an additional 925 lower-level insurgents in the past 110 days. The raids have been particularly effective around Kandahar, they say, where there are "indications that IED attacks have decreased and that Taliban control appears to be weakening". It really does say this.

June was worst month for Army suicides, statistics show

Washington (CNN) -- More U.S. soldiers killed themselves last month than in recent Army history, according to Army statistics released Thursday, confounding officials trying to reverse the grim trend.

The statistics show that 32 soldiers killed themselves in June, the highest number in a single month since the Vietnam era. Twenty-one of them were on active duty, while 11 were in the National Guard or Army Reserve in an inactive status.

Seven of those soldiers killed themselves while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the Army numbers.

American Psychosis

clippers remarks: "When a culture lives within an illusion it perpetuates a state of permanent infantilism or childishness."
"The decline of American empire began long before the current economic meltdown or the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It began before the first Gulf War or Ronald Reagan. It began when we shifted, in the words of Harvard historian Charles Maier, from an ?empire of production? to an ?empire of consumption.? By the end of the Vietnam War, when the costs of the war ate away at Lyndon Johnson?s Great Society and domestic oil production began its steady, inexorable decline, we saw our country transformed from one that primarily produced to one that primarily consumed. The United States, locked in the kind of twilight disconnect that grips dying empires, is a country entranced by illusions. It spends its emotional and intellectual energy on the trivial and the absurd. It is captivated by the hollow stagecraft of celebrity culture as the walls crumble. This celebrity culture giddily licenses a dark voyeurism into other people?s humiliation, pain, weakness and betrayal. Day after day, one lurid saga after another, whether it is Michael Jackson, Britney Spears or John Edwards, enthralls the country ? despite bank collapses, wars, mounting poverty or the criminality of its financial class.

We have a right, in the cult of the self, to get whatever we desire. We can do anything, even belittle and destroy those around us, including our friends, to make money, to be happy and to become famous.

The musical is about long-haired hippies living in New York in the 1960s, who get naked, take drugs and protest against the Vietnam War.

"When you see it, you realise the world is still trying to achieve the same things it was then," says Gavin Creel, who plays the shows main character Claude.

Thailand uses wasps to kill bugs

Thailand uses wasps to kill bugs (Source: Thinkstock)

Thailand will deploy a 250,000-strong army of wasps in the northeast of the country in a bid to get rid of bugs that have been nibbling away at its cassava crops.

Originally from South America, the mealybug feeds only on cassava and in 2009 destroyed 20% of Thailands cassava.

The pest has also chomped its way into Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam.

Rod Lefroy, an agricultural scientist with the International Center for Tropical Agriculture, said Thailand has raised a special army of wasps which are known to be particularly effective in wiping out the mealybug.

Researchers have tested the wasp on insects native to Thailand to see if it upsets the natural ecology, and so far, the insect appears to feed only on the mealybug, Lefroy says.

Starch is also extracted for use in a wide variety of food and other products.

Thailands cassava makes up more than 60% of global exports of this root crop and generate more than $1.4 billion of income for Thai farmers each year.

UK to cut foreign aid to rich India

clipped by: tabsey
clippers remarks: Maybe the Poms should go further and ask for a little help.
LONDON: Under pressure to reduce its foreign assistance, PM David Cameron may scale down the £250 million British aid given to India annually, saying wealthy local people could do more to help their poor countrymen.

International development secretary Andrew Mitchell has signalled that the "£250 million of public money spent annually on nuclear-armed India could be scaled back."

He said the rich NRI population of Britain could do more to help their countrymen. Besides, the £40 million spent by the Department for International Development (DFID) in Vietnam, now regarded as an Asian "tiger" economy, will be axed.

It follows the disclosure that development funding to China and Russia would be withdrawn. Mitchell told the Sunday Times: "India is more complex and more difficult than China. But this is a (aid) programme I am looking at in detail." He defended the governments decision to ring-fence overseas aid while most other departments face savage cuts.

Tomgram: Nick Turse, American War Versus Real War

clipped by: ratilfar
clippers remarks: Left screen center was usually the American platoon, a kind of ?lost patrol? in an alien land, part of what, even during the war, was regularly referred to as an American -- but not a Vietnamese -- ?tragedy.? From Oliver Stone?s Platoon and Stanley Kubrick?s Full Metal Jacket to Robert Zemeckis?s Forrest Gump, Vietnamese suffering became, at best, a distant backdrop for American suffering, and the war?s conflicts essentially took place among Americans within that platoon. (A rare exception was Good Morning, Vietnam, but you would never again, in all those post-war years, see a scene like the first one in Peter Davis?s Oscar-winning 1974 documentary Hearts and Minds, which opens on a Vietnamese village, quiet and peaceful, before you notice the silhouettes of soldiers entering -- intruding on an emerald green land, really -- from the edge of the screen.)
Clip Source: www.tomdispatch.com
One striking aspect of the Vietnam years -- and the antiwar movement of that era -- was the degree to which you could see images of Vietnamese civilian suffering here in the United States.  Among the iconic images of that war, for instance, was Nick Ut?s photo of a young girl, burned by napalm from an air strike, running down a road screaming.  And among war images, it was by no means alone.  There were, of course, the horrific shots Army photographer Ron Haeberle took of what became known as the My Lai massacre as it was happening.  After a long and tortuous journey, those photos finally appeared as a ten-page centerfold-from-hell in LIFE magazine (even if an African antelope was on its cover).

Strangely enough, though, in the American screen war that followed the real war by some years, Vietnamese suffering largely disappeared.

But time appears to be running out on monoculture and many other standard practices of agribusiness, just as it is on so many of the thoughtless ways the civilized world does business.

Whether geopolitically, agriculturally or in the privacy of our relationship with ourselves, we come out fearful and fighting.

Is there another way?

?Permaculture?s sensible answer,? writes Mary DeDanan, ?is for humans to ally themselves with nature instead of trying to control nature. . . . Permaculture insists on the whole picture, from soil microbes to global weather patterns. It takes advantage of every relationship and synergy. It uses local resources, or grows its own. It wastes nothing.?

We can?t keep playing conquering fool, arrogantly ordering the world to our liking by killing everything that doesn?t fit into it. We can?t keep throwing more of the same at our problems. We can?t keep fighting nature, or one another, and expect somehow to win in the end.

?Just as the heavy use of antibiotics contributed to the rise of drug-resistant supergerms, American farmers? near-ubiquitous use of the weedkiller Roundup has led to the rapid growth of tenacious new superweeds,?

Thus to eradicate the ?superweeds? that have evolved in response to the widespread use of Roundup, other chemical companies are scrambling to develop alternative herbicides and genetically modified seeds that can resist them, including, the Times notes without irony, Dow Chemical Co., which hopes to market seeds resistant to 2,4-D, a component of Agent Orange ? the defoliant we used to ravage Vietnam between 1962 and 1971.

Yeah, we?re still at war, and not only in Afghanistan and Iraq.

On being labeled as racist

According to liberals, if you disagree with their thinking, and if you disagree with the Obama administration, you are not only wrong, you are a ?racist.?

The latest strike by the left comes from the NAACP, which has resolved that the tea party movement is inherently ?racist.?

If you are a conservative ? including a conservative African-American ? there is no room for you at the NAACP. If you have opinions that differ from the NAACP and the liberal establishment, and if you are African-American, you are an ?Uncle Tom,? a ?negro,? ?not black enough? and ?against our people.?

Bill Clinton was smeared as a racist by the Obama campaign when Hillary Clinton was running for president.

First, members of the tea party movement were called disgruntled voters

Next the Democratic National Committee relased an ad calling us an ?angry mob.? Now, we?re being called racist.

All these attacks have failed because they are untrue and the American people know it.

For the benefit of any natural born damned fools that may have wandered in: there is no South Vietnam anymore. It was conquered by North Vietnam in 1975, shortly after a Democratic Congress ? yes, the same political party as Rep. Jackson-Lee?s ? defunded the defense of South Vietnam

let us dispose of this right now: she?s not talking about North and South Korea. We know this for three reasons:

  • First off, she was quoting a casualty rate of 58K, which is consistent with Vietnam War American casualties but not Korean War ones;

  • Second, North and South Korea are not anywhere near the point of having normalized relations.

  • Third: Rep. Jackson-Lee is a liberal Democratic politician, and they really are that pig-ignorant of American history.

The statistics on how many rounds America has fired per confirmed kill in most recent conflicts has always been absurdly high ? numbering in the tens of thousands.  This fact alone has caused some to argue that a better strategy to win Vietnam might have been to drop dollar bills as it would have been cheaper and alienated fewer people.  Yet the story of absurd waste of ammunition is not the story of the whole of the US Army.  Some units pride themselves on the motto of ?One shot.  One kill?.  These rare breed of soldiers are the elite sniper teams and modern PC sniper games give you an opportunity to take part in warfare on their terms.

A battlefield is a complicated environment that can be extremely hard to model effectively on a PC.  It is harder still to assign a believable AI to both the second man in a sniper team as well as the actions of the enemies of a player on that battlefield.
