U.S. Marines leave Iraq after 7 years

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The U.S. Marine Corps wrapped up nearly seven years in Iraq Saturday, handing over duties to the U.S. Army.

The transfer of power begins a series of withdrawals of U.S. troops in Iraq. During a ceremony, the Marines formally handed over control of the countrys largest province, Sunni-dominated Anbar, to the Army.

If all goes as planned, the last remaining Marines will be followed out by thousands of soldiers in the coming months. President Obama has ordered all but 50,000 troops out of Iraq by Aug. 31, 2010.

One Anchorage Marine says he was deployed to Iraq twice, and he noticed a change between his first and second trips there.

"The first time there, they were an attachment to us -- it felt like we did a lot more the first time," said SSgt. Devon Lireley. "And the second time over, the Iraqis took a lot more control of their own area and we were more there to watch what they did, to help them if they needed assistance."

Howard Zinn, the Boston University historian and political activist who was an early opponent of US involvement in Vietnam and whose books, such as "A Peoples History of the United States," inspired young and old to rethink the way textbooks present the American experience, died today in Santa Monica, Calif, where he was traveling. He was 87.

"Hes made an amazing contribution to American intellectual and moral culture," Noam Chomsky, the left-wing activist and MIT professor, said tonight. "Hes changed the conscience of America in a highly constructive way. I really cant think of anyone I can compare him to in this respect."

The Supremacy of the Right as democracy dies

clipped by: beanz

This past week had the feel of ?game, set, match,? the end to a long string of miscalculations by the American Left and a crowning victory for the cynical American Right ? a triple whammy of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling to unleash corporate campaign spending, Air America?s dissolution, and the Massachusetts Senate election.

Especially after the Supreme Court ruling allowing corporations to spend whatever they want to punish some politicans and reward others, it is hard to see a road back for American democracy.

The United States is now at the very dark terminus of a four-decades-long journey,

In retrospect, one can see key turning points as far back as 1968, the year when the Vietnam War and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy swallowed the optimism of a generation and divided the Democratic Party

Not only did the Supreme Court reverse the electoral judgment of the American people regarding who should be President,

President Obama: You really need to listen to Afghans not in Kabul

clippers remarks: Afghanistan is not Vietnam but the types of mistakes are the same. Not checking and rechecking "intelligence" so you know you are not just being used to settle a private score. Really knowing the culture so you do not accomplish exactly the opposite of your goals. If you dont want a repeat of people clinging to helicopters as the last allied forces leave, you need to listen to stories like these.

Ghosts before dawn

P1200001

On Wednesday I flew to Urgun in East Paktika to meet with some people at the US military base in order to try to get the other side of the story about this marauding Afghan commander employed by Special Operations Forces (SOF), who is apparently striking terror into the hearts of the local population down in one of Paktikas southern districts.

?They need to analyse their reports. Do they realize that there could be issues of personal enmity or a land dispute influencing such reports? People who want revenge for whatever reason sometimes just go to Special Forces and tell them lies about people. The ANSF are sometimes corrupt but at least they know who is who here. They should do these searches. The people here have already been disappointed. We want peace, we want reconstruction. But these Americans are just insulting us?.

Doctors study link between combat and brain disease

clipped by: tabsey
The California neuropathologist who discovered damage in the brains of former professional football players has found similar damage in the brain of a deceased Vietnam veteran ? a potentially groundbreaking finding that suggests combat troops who suffer head trauma might be susceptible to a degenerative brain disease

Dr. Bennet Omalu, an expert in forensic neuropathology and the chief medical examiner of San Joaquin County, Calif., said the 61-year-old Army veteran had a history of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as psychotic behavior, much of which had been attributed to a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder

But the autopsy showed something else: an abnormal buildup of harmful proteins in the vet?s brain, the same proteins linked to repetitive concussions in boxers, and now football players

?This is a sentinel case,?

The brain findings in this deceased Army veteran are similar to the brain findings in the retired contact-sport athletes. Now, we need to look at more brains.?

"Iceberg -- Dead Ahead!"

clipped by: merrie
clippers remarks: Criminal. Irresponsible. Outrageous.

Even before the federal government nationalizes the entire, $3 trillion-a-year health care industry, its spending was completely out of control: data courtesy of Bianco Research

The only single American event in history that even comes close to matching the cost of the credit crisis is World War II: Original Cost: $288 billion, Inflation Adjusted Cost: $3.6 trillion

The $4.6165 trillion dollars committed so far is about a trillion dollars ($979 billion dollars) greater than the entire cost of World War II borne by the United States: $3.6 trillion, adjusted for inflation (original cost was $288 billion).

Go figure: WWII was a relative bargain.

I estimate that by the time we get through 2010, the final bill may scale up to as much as $10 trillion dollars?

Jim Bianco of Bianco Research crunched the inflation adjusted numbers. The bailout has cost more than all of these big budget government expenditures ? combined:

? Marshall Plan: Cost: $12.7 billion, Inflation Adjusted Cost: $115.3 billion
? Louisiana Purchase: Cost: $15 million, Inflation Adjusted Cost: $217 billion
? Race to the Moon: Cost: $36.4 billion, Inflation Adjusted Cost: $237 billion
? S&L Crisis: Cost: $153 billion, Inflation Adjusted Cost: $256 billion
? Korean War: Cost: $54 billion, Inflation Adjusted Cost: $454 billion
? The New Deal: Cost: $32 billion (Est), Inflation Adjusted Cost: $500 billion (Est)
? Invasion of Iraq: Cost: $551b, Inflation Adjusted Cost: $597 billion
? Vietnam War: Cost: $111 billion, Inflation Adjusted Cost: $698 billion
? NASA: Cost: $416.7 billion, Inflation Adjusted Cost: $851.2 billion

TOTAL: $3.92 trillion

That is $686 billion less than the cost of the credit crisis thus far.

I blame Bush.

Systemic Change

clipped by: debbyski
Clip Source: www.opednews.com

Dr. King in his Beyond Vietnam speech criticized "the Nietzsches" of the world who saw Love as a weak and cowardly force.

Therefore as Dr. King observed in his Beyond Vietnam Speech, in order to move past the American War Machine based on seemingly endless enemies, we need to restructure society into a Just and Compassionate System in which the economy and the political and social structures work for the people.

Dr. King warned of a future in which Compassion has been rejected and Hatred and Greed fuel the profit motive.

That vision is based on a systemic approach that restructures society based on humane values and human need. Quite simply, Dr. Kings vision is a vision of Love in action.

We declare Love and Justice are nice sounding words but have no real place in human systems. Only might will make us right and make us safe.

We can demand that societal systems be organized around Compassion and Justice.

Forced Recantations of Faith Continue in Vietnam

clipped by: wiccantexan

New Christians in northwest violently compelled to return to ancestor worship.

A Vietnamese man violently forced to recant his fledgling Christian faith faces pressure from authorities and clansmen to prove his return to traditional Hmong belief by sacrificing to ancestors next month.

Christians Sung A Sinh and Hang A Xa of Trung Phu village were also beaten about the head and back and fined a pig of 16 kilos each so that local authorities could eat, according to the reports. The documents stated that the reason for the mistreatment of the Christians was that they abandoned ?the good and beautiful? traditional Hmong beliefs and practices to follow Protestant Christianity.

Following Po?s written recantation, authorities subjected him to further family and clan pressure and ?fines,? as well as rites to satisfy traditional Hmong spirits said to have become upset when he offended them by becoming a Christian.

I interviewed him once - on the record - for a Peoplenomics.com piece (Issue #150, September 5, 2004 in the library if youre a subscriber) since hes the only person I know who had personal dealings with Osama Bin Laden.  An extract from that piece:
