The devastation of unexploded ordnance from the ?American War.?

DAI NGHIA VILLAGE, Vietnam?A house sits vacant off a dirt path in Dai An hamlet. The concrete home has a rusted corrugated metal roof, and attached to the building is a small, open-air structure standing on wood supports. Its metal roof is pockmarked with holes that allow sunlight to filter in.

A billboard warns of the danger from unexploded ordnance. Photo by Tam Turse.

When asked what she would say to the American people, the mother of one UXO victim says, ?The American people should take responsibility. ... These are the consequences of the American War.?

People in the hamlet hear mournful cries when they near the home.

Drug-Law reform advocated by UN

clipped by: beanz
clippers remarks: Sanity is spreading, maybe there is hope yet !
Clip Source: www.voanews.com
UN Calls for AIDS Law Reform

The United Nations is calling for governments in Asia, many with tough anti-drug laws, to review their legislation to allow for alternative drug treatments and policies in an effort to reduce the spread of the AIDS virus across the region.

Asia has some of the toughest anti-narcotics drugs laws globally, with many countries attaching long life sentences or even the death penalty to those found guilty of possession and trafficking of drugs such as heroin.

law reform is necessary to reduce the spread of the AIDS pandemic, especially through injecting drug users.

The United Nations is advocating methods of "harm reduction", such as injecting needle exchange and drug substitution programs through the use methadone, to reduce the spread of the virus. Such programs reduce the transmission of the virus that otherwise would occur by way of infected needles.

Such programs have been successful in Australia and have been adopted in Taiwan, Bangladesh and Vietnam.

"We?re not going to win this war."

clipped by: baydawg
clippers remarks: but maybe we can negotiate an exit if we sit down and talk

As former British Foreign Service officer Rory Stewart argues, "when the decision to increase the number of troops in 2005 was made, there was no insurgency." Indeed, the surge ? and the civilian casualties that accompanied it ? ignited the current resistance movement. Back then the Taliban controlled 54% of the country. Today that figure is 72% and rising.

The illusion is that adding 21,000 troops to the 38,000 U.S. soldiers and 50,000 NATO soldiers could possibly make a difference. The United States, with 500,000 soldiers, couldn?t prevail in Vietnam, a country of 67,000 square miles and 19 million people. Afghanistan has half again that population and 250,000 square miles of some of the planet?s most unforgiving terrain.

As Brigadier General Mark Carleton-Smith, Britain?s top military officer in Afghanistan, bluntly told the Sunday Times, "We?re not going to win this war."

Delusions of Omnipotence

clipped by: quickstar
Clip Source: www.truthdig.com
Posted on Apr 16, 2009

The American foreign policy debate usually is about what the country should do, rather than what it can do. What it can do is usually assumed to be anything Washington wants to do, since we are the most powerful nation the world has even seen.

This has created a situation in which the United States government and the political and bureaucratic classes have undertaken military project after military project that the government can?t do. This is not usually commented upon but has been true since the Korean and Vietnam wars. The country?s greatest victory, winning the Cold War, was in fact a gift from the Soviet Union, by collapsing and losing it.

This organized futility is well known and much criticized. The fundamental problem is the illusion of omnipotence: America is and will continue to be omnipotent because the rest of the world expects this; it is America?s Manifest Destiny.

that the United States has a level of military power that it doesn?t need

A 40 Years Struggle Towards Islam

clipped by: jebat99
Nation of Islam. Fruit of Islam. Masjed Al-Quran. Three different organizations that every African American should know about.

Salwa Abd-Allah Picture © pluralism.org

My name is Salwa Abd-Allah. I was born Edwina Mariea Fauntleroy to Reverend and Mrs. Jerry Cornelius Fauntleroy in Newport News, Virginia, US, in 1946. I have three brothers and I was the third of the four of us.

I have been striving to be a Muslim for approximately 40 years. I became socially aware in the 1960s in America during the Vietnam War era and the turbulent years of racial unrest as descendants of slaves in general began protesting the subtle and not-so-subtle discrimination that was spread in America at that time.

There was no voice in the mainstream media about the separatist option until the CBS TV news program aired The Hate That Hate Produced.

Having studied five years of French, I had an immature idea of how an alternative language offered greater choices.

The companionship of the Quran has taught me to value every command and every prohibition.

the containment influences on the U.S presidents

clipped by: xiongdy_vip
clippers remarks: The word containment is associated most strongly with the policies of U.S. President Truman.
But the president later mostly insist on a relaxing, moral way of containment. Still, the Soviet Union broke up and the Warsaw Pack disintegrate in 1991
Clip Source: en.wikipedia.org
The word containment is associated most strongly with the policies of U.S. President Harry S. Truman (1945-53), including the establishment of the North Atlantic Treaty Organizaton, a mutual defense pact.

Containment had particular influence on the foreign policies of President Lyndon Johnson (1963-69), especially those concerning Vietnam.

President Richard Nixon (1969-74) promoted a variation of containment he called détente, or relaxation of tension.

In 1973-74, the U.S. Congress, questioning both the need for and morality of containment in Vietnam, cut off aid to the South Vietnamese government.

President Jimmy Carter (1976-81) emphasized human rights rather than anti-communism

President Ronald Reagan (1981-89) promoted rollback with respect to both Nicaragua and Afghanistan.

Despite these departures, central aspects of containment, including NATO and nuclear deterrence, remained in effect even after the end of the Cold War in 1989 and the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

To believe the state is never involved in illegal conspiracies would require one to believe the state incapable of criminal behavior and Julius Caesar was killed in a random walk-by knifing.

The problem Tin-foil hatters face is the lack of any subjective review of that evidence. The state is always in charge of "officially" discovering evidence

Lately, I have become increasingly skeptical of the timing and circumstances surrounding mass shootings.

how, within a short time of the state indicating its intention of prohibiting the sale of a certain type firearm, a mass murder occurs in which that type weapon is used.

a person becoming angry at someone

almost universal use of mind-altering drugs

such as Prozac or Ritalin.

a great number of the shooters kill themselves

Has the state gained from any of these very suspicious shootings?

Zinn on class in America Pt.2

Howard Zinn: In the United States we are brought up to think theres only one class

Zinn has been active in the Civil Rights and the anti-war movements in the United States. Zinn was raised in a working-class family in Brooklyn, and flew bombing missions for the United States in World War II, an experience he now points to in shaping his opposition to war. In 1956, he became a professor at Spelman College in Atlanta, a school for black women, where he soon became involved in the Civil rights movement, which he participated in as an adviser to the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee SNCC and chronicled, in his book SNCC The New Abolitionists. Zinn collaborated with historian Staughton Lynd and mentored a young student named Alice Walker. When he was fired in 1963 for insubordination related to his protest work, he moved to Boston University, where he became a leading critic of the Vietnam War.

Beyond War: A New Economy is Possible!

clipped by: nedhamson1
This past Saturday, April 4, in honor of Dr. King and his visionary Beyond Vietnam speech in 1967, 10,000 people marched on Wall Street to protest the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and to demand a larger investment in the needs of our communities. Labor, veterans, students, immigrant rights groups, military families, faith-based people, womens groups, and community groups joined us for a lively, vibrant march.

Joining us, too, was Rev. James Lawson, a leader to us all and co-worker with Dr. King. Speaking before the start of the march, Lawson said to marchers, In the spirit of Dr. King and the movement for equality and justice of the fifities and sixties, I say if we want peace to blossom, we must eradicate poverty, racism, sexism, violence, and greed in the U.S. Peace cannot come by crying peace. Peace can only begin to emerge when justice does.
