Check Your Facts Hillary!

clipped by: boniface

Dont Forget Pat Nixon!

"I was the first first lady taken into a war zone since Eleanor Roosevelt."

-Hillary Clinton, press conference, March 25, 2008.

The Clinton campaign has cited newspaper accounts, including one in The Washington Post, to bolster her claim that her now famous March 1996 trip to Bosnia was the first visit to a "war zone" by a first lady since World War II. She is overlooking a trip to Saigon by Pat Nixon at the height of the Vietnam war as well as a trip by Barbara Bush to Saudi Arabia two months before the launching of Desert Storm.

By almost any measure, the Nixon trip to Saigon in July 1969 should surely count as the most dangerous of the three visits. Unlike Bosnia in March 1996 and Saudi Arabia in November 1990, South Vietnam was an actual, not "potential", war zone in the aftermath of the 1968 Tet offensive, according to Colonel Gene Boyer, the Nixons chief helicopter pilot.

"There are two kinds of Republicans: millionaires and suckers."

clipped by: righthand
clippers remarks: Id like to suggest a very simple strategy for American liberals: Get mean. Stop policing the language and start using it to hurt our enemies. American liberals are so busy purging their speech of any words that might offend anyone that they have no notion of using language to cause some salutary pain.

Why, for example, not popularize slogans that mock the Bush loyalists as "suckers"? Something like, "There are two kinds of Republicans: millionaires and suckers." Put that on a few bumper stickers and I guarantee a lot of "South Park Republicans" will quit the GOP. They just smirk when you tsk-tsk at them for being disrespectful. They want to be disrespectful; every normal young male wants to be.

Drop the condescending "populist" talk and get mean

"There are two kinds of Republicans: millionaires and suckers."

For most of them, the 2004 election came down to a classic playground scene: Would John Kerry defend himself when attacked by bullies?

Liberals, still stunned by the way a legitimate combat vet like Kerry was beaten by a combat-dodging spoiled brat like Bush, never understood that for millions of voters, the question wasnt how well Kerry fought in Vietnam but whether he would fight in 2004

Would he defend himself when called out by the gang of disgusting bullies Bush had gathered around himself?

"Youre questioning my record on behalf of a skunk like Bush who spent the war with the Alabama National Guard, and then went AWOL from the Guard?"

The American people are the beneficiaries of centuries of serious Leftist violence, starting with the American Revolution and climaxing in the Civil War

Peace symbol - 50 years on

clipped by: hayesstw
clippers remarks: Jerry Hortons now-famous peace symbol is 50 years old. Its first public appearance was at the Aldermaston March in 1958, organised by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament to protest against nuclear weapons.

Later it was widened to a general peace symbol, and not simply against nuclear weapons, and has been used by people protesting against wars in general, such as the Vietnam War and the current Iraqi-American War.
Clip Source: www.guardian.co.uk
In 1958, on the coldest Easter weekend anyone could remember for years and just weeks after the birth of CND, 4,000 people gathered in the centre of London for a rally addressed by Michael Foot and Canon John Collins.

Yesterday, according to the groups estimate, up to 5,000 supporters turned up to celebrate the anniversary and protest at the governments plans to renew the Trident nuclear weapons system, in the largest demonstration at the site for two decades.

Clutching replicas of the "lollipop" placards featuring artist Gerald Holtoms now-famous CND symbol, young and old clambered from coaches to turn the perimeter fence into a sea of rainbow banners and multicoloured knitwear.

Cheneys Five Draft Deferments During the Vietnam Era Emerge as a Campaign Issue

He said he "never served" because of deferments to finish a college career that lasted six years rather than four, which he attributed to subpar academic performance and the fact that he had to work to pay for his education.

He added that he "would have obviously been happy to serve had I been called."

Away from the hearing room, he told the Washington Post that he had sought his deferments because "I had other priorities in the 60s than military service."

"I dont regret the decisions I made," he added. "I complied fully with all the requirements of the statutes, registered with the draft when I turned 18. Had I been drafted, I would have been happy to serve."

"Five deferments seems incredible to me," said David Curry, a professor at the University of Missouri in St. Louis who has written extensively about the draft, including a 1985 book, "Sunshine Patriots: Punishment and the Vietnam Offender."

Cheney interview - someone needs to slap this guy

All Volunteer force.
If you ever need to throw up, save this clip and watch it.

Somebody needs to slap this guy

Noting the burden placed on military families, the vice president said the biggest burden is carried by President George W. Bush, who made the decision to commit US troops to war, and reminded the public that U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan volunteered for duty.

?It obviously brings home I think for a lot of people the cost that?s involved in the global war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan,? Cheney said in the interview, conducted in Turkey?

Well isn?t that a convenient way to get out of taking responsibility. No doubt Cheney is still patting himself on the back all these years later for his cleverness in requesting and receiving five deferments from duty in Vietnam.

One problem with his logic

?When you talk about an all-volunteer force, some of these soldiers, airmen, Marines have been on two, three, four, some of them more than that, deployments

The Army alone says 58,000 US soldiers have been redeployed to war because of the stop-loss policy

John McCains Pastor sympathetic to Obama - says John McCain would do the same

clipped by: BobbyRutan
clippers remarks: Must say it did catch my eye that John McCain appears to have never been baptized.

Baptism has traditionally been seen as necessary for salvation.
Clip Source: www.reuters.com
Yeary was sympathetic as a fellow pastor and said while he did not agree with Wrights comments, all preachers eventually got caught in the trap of their own exuberance

"All preachers have a tendency to overstate because our passion is so intense. But I thought Obama did a fine job in response. He preserved his friendship with his pastor while disagreeing with him," Yeary said

"Im sure John McCain would probably say the same thing about me if he were asked So, do you agree with everything your pastor says?" he added with a laugh
Clip Source: www.reuters.com
McCain, a former prisoner-of-war in Vietnam, was raised in the Episcopal Church but has been attending Yearys church for about 15 years. Yeary declined to comment on McCains reluctance to finally undergo a baptism ceremony, a key ritual of the faith

"John and I are having continual dialogue about his spiritual pursuits," Yeary said.

Abraham Lincoln Bush

the American Revolution, World War II, Korea, the Cold War and even Vietnam. Today, Vice President Cheney joined the conservative chorus comparing the calamity in Iraq to the U.S. Civil War. And in that ever-growing White House tall tale, of course, George W. Bush is Abraham Lincoln.

Back in September 2006, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice introduced the shockingly inappropriate Civil War analogy to defend President Bushs stay the course strategy in Iraq:

"Im sure there are people who thought it was a mistake to fight the Civil War to its end and to insist that the emancipation of slaves would hold," Rice said in the new issue of Essence magazine.

"I know there were people who said, Why dont we get out of this now, take a peace with the South, but leave the South with slaves?" Rice said.

Expert warns of unrest as rice price soars

LOS BANOS, Philippines (AFP) ? As the price of rice hovers near record levels, many poor countries face the spectre of riots by hungry people, according to one of the worlds leading rice experts.

Key producers India and Vietnam have both curtailed exports, sending some of the worlds largest rice importers including the Philippines scrambling to procure supplies for their people.

Spot prices have recently hit more than 700 dollars a tonne, more than three times the price of just five years to go.

Industry officials in Thailand, the worlds top exporter, have warned that prices could soon rise to 1,000 dollars a tonne.

Vietnam, the worlds third-largest exporter of the grain, also faces the prospect of a return of the deadly crop disease that impacted heavily on its crop yield last year.

These are just some of the problems that keep Robert Zeigler, head of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) up late at night.

US Democrats jump on McCains Iran-Qaeda gaffe

clipped by: tabsey
clippers remarks: Seems that this bloke hasnt got the pre-senile dementia that Bush shows the symptoms of; he is full blown already.
Clip Source: www.abc.net.au

Republican presidential candidate John McCain touts his foreign policy expertise at every turn, but he has given Democrats ammunition against his experience by wrongly saying Iran trains Al Qaeda members.

During an official visit in Jordan on Tuesday, the 71-year-old said members of Al Qaeda in Iraq were slipping into neighbouring Iran and receiving training before returning to the war-torn country to wreak havoc.

But while President George W Bushs administration has accused Shiite-majority Iran of training and arming Shiite extremists, it has never made the link with Al Qaeda in Iraq, which is a Sunni group.

Senator McCain made the gaffe right in the middle of an official visit in the Middle East that was supposed to highlight his knowledge in foreign affairs.

"Its common knowledge and has been reported in the media that Al Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq. Thats well known," the Vietnam war veteran said.

Worlds best-known protest symbol turns 50

clipped by: mickfinn
clippers remarks: Gerald Holtom, the designer and a former WWII conscientious objector from London, considered using a Christian cross motif but, instead, settled on using letters from the semaphore alphabet, superimposing N(uclear) on D(isarmament) and placing them within a circle symbolising Earth. The sign was quickly adopted by CND.

How the sign migrated to the US is explained in various ways. Some say it was brought back from the Aldermaston protest by civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, a black pacifist who had studied Gandhis techniques of non-violence.

American pacifist Ken Kolsbun said: "The sign really got going over here during the 1960s and 70s, when it became associated with anti-Vietnam protests."

As the sign became a badge of the hippie movement of the late 1960s, the hippies critics scornfully compared it to a chicken footprint, and drew parallels with the runic letter indicating death.

In the 1980s it became the banner of the international grassroots anti-nuclear movemen
Clip Source: news.bbc.co.uk
March from London to Aldermaston

It started life as the emblem of the British anti-nuclear movement but it has become an international sign for peace, and arguably the most widely used protest symbol in the world

It had its first public outing 50 years ago on a chilly Good Friday as thousands of British anti-nuclear campaigners set off from Londons Trafalgar Square on a 50-mile march to the weapons factory at Aldermaston

In a book to commemorate the symbols 50th birthday, Mr Kolsbun charts how it was transported across the Atlantic and took on additional meanings for the Civil Rights movement, the counter-culture of the 1960s and 70s including the anti-Vietnam protests, and the environmental, womens and gay rights movements.
