Clipmarks | Vietnam ClipsHas the Iraq war suddenly disappeared?clipped by: thinkingblueclippers remarks: It would seem so if you get your news solely from the mainstream media. Hardly a mention of the 5 American soldiers who were killed in Northern Iraq by a roadside bomb, the other day. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080128/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_080119205312 The anchors are all whooping it up over the presidential race. When they do get serious, the talk turns to how the economy is taking a dive. Anything to take the American viewer away from the illegal war. But for the ones who are still losing loved ones. It will never vanish for them. And also for those Iraqi unfortunates who havent the means to escape from the Bush/Neocon created HELLHOLE they call home. It will take at least a 100 years, if ever, for the nightmare to fade. Oh, there are articles of the pain and suffering because of this Illegal-War but you have to hunt for them. In case youre still interested, read this sad tale for starters: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-01-24-smalltowns_N.htm Why Iraq Isnt KoreaIn the early days of the Iraq war, the analogy of choice for the Bush Administration was the post-World War II occupations of Japan and Germany. They had been bitter enemies of the United States; were both destroyed in a merciless world war; and eventually turned into peaceful, democratic allies of the first order. Anyone who said democracy couldnt come at the barrel of a gun was denying the obvious. ![]() talking point lasted until about the fall of 2003 clear that victory was nowhere near default position for cr was that Iraq had become Vietnam. in the midst of the Administrations surge strategy, comes the latest the Administration is now kicking around the idea of Iraq as Korea. this analogy is so ludicrous. Koreas Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) has been simplicity itself: Iraq, which is the opposite of simplicity itself assumption for the Korea analogy appears to be that al-Qaeda and its remaining Sunni allies would be the bad guys threatening the U.S. bases. problem number one. ![]()

While former Vietnam POW John McCain campaigns for the Republican presidential nomination in Florida, another retired veteran is counting on his military experience to catapult him to victory in the Sunshine State. It was the military - specifically enlisted men - who ended the Vietnam War by refusing to fight and threatening mutiny. One of the greatest hopes for the US is for this generation of military men and women to put their pledge to support the Constitution first and stop serving the crooks who have subverted the nation. To audiences of the poor, Kennedy would present himself as a saviour. The words "change" and "hope" were used relentlessly and cynically. For audiences of fearful whites, he would use racist codes, such as "law and order". With those opposed to the invasion of Vietnam, he would attack "putting American boys in the line of fire", but never say when he would withdraw them. That year (after Kennedy was assassinated), Richard Nixon used a version of the same, malleable speech to win the presidency. Thereafter, it was used successfully by Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and the two Bushes. Carter promised a foreign policy based on "human rights" - and practised the very opposite. Reagans "freedom agenda" was a bloodbath in central America. Clinton "solemnly pledged" universal health care and tore down the last safety The former president of Tanzania Julius Nyerere once asked, "Why havent we all got a vote in the US election? Surely everyone with a TV set has earned that right just for enduring the merciless bombardment every four years." Having reported four presidential election campaigns, from the Kennedys to Nixon, Carter to Reagan, with their Zeppelins of platitudes, robotic followers and rictal wives, I can sympathise. But what difference would the vote make? Of the presidential candidates I have interviewed, only George C Wallace, governor of Alabama, spoke the truth. "Theres not a dimes worth of difference between the Democrats and Republicans," he said. And he was shot. What struck me, living and working in the United States, was that presidential campaigns were a parody, entertaining and often grotesque. They are a ritual danse macabre of flags, balloons and bullshit, designed to camouflage a venal system based on money power, human division and a culture of permanent war. ![]() Uncovering the Psychological Roots of the Bush Tragedyclipped by: papananookWhen we look deeper into Bush?s psyche, we find a self-loathing so intense that he feels the need to compensate for it through his belief that he has been especially chosen by God to be president of the United States. An idealized self-image, or a narcissistic personality disorder, or grandiose delusions are often coping mechanisms for self-loathing. This psychological assessment is consistent with Bush?s early experiences. He was exposed to his mother?s serious depressions and to his father?s extended absences from the family and hands-off parenting. Bush also faced the prospect of never living up to his father?s ?triumphant? achievements. In addition, he assimilated the shame of his dyslexia and attention deficit disorder and the painful perception of Jeb as favorite son. His referal to himself as "War" president is trying to make up for his cowardly stance being AWOL from his Air National Guard unit during the Vietnam war. ![]() Für die Inhalte dieses Feeds ist alleine der jeweilige Autor/Anbieter verantwortlich. Clipmarks | Vietnam ClipsReclaiming King: Beyond "I Have a Dream"clipped by: Rasmusclippers remarks: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly." -- Dr. Martin Luther King jr, "Letter from Birmingham Jail", April 1963 Clip Source: www.alternet.org The mainstream media would like us to look at "I Have a Dream" and virtually nothing else. They can package that speech as a nice two-minute nostalgia clip. But I believe every good progressive American should look more to the King of 68 for inspiration. During the final two years of his life, King took on the far more complex de facto racism of northern cities like Chicago, addressed labor inequality, and took a very bold and highly criticized stance against the Vietnam War: I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today, my own government. The far right still despised him and everything he represented. But even more telling was the rejection he received from the left. ![]()
