Point Man, Roger Helleclipped by: dl211clippers remarks: ?I want to believe that some of our politicians are just blinded to the truth of what we are facing, but reality tells me that there are some in politics who hate everything that this country stands for and want to see us defeated, again, by our enemies. But this enemy is unlike any that we have ever faced. May God help us to stand for what we believe, or we will certainly fall before the onslaught of radical Islam.??Sgt. Roger Helle (USMC Ret.) Clip Source: us.f319.mail.yahoo.com Veterans Day Profile: Point Man, Roger Helle ?I?m Sgt. Helle?s brother. How is he?? asked Roger?s twin brother, Ron, also an E-5, USMC. ?I?m sorry son, but your brother is going to die,? the physician responded tersely. That was July 1970, China Beach, Vietnam. In an instant, gunfire erupted and a series of ?daisy-chain? explosions propelled Roger and two other Marines over the vegetation into an adjacent rice paddy. As he slowly recovered from the shock of the concussion generated by the explosions, he could see green tracers from VC weapons cutting up and down the trail. The ambush was over as quickly as it began, and more than 60 VC emerged like ghosts from the bamboo, killed the wounded Marines on the trail, collected their weapons and disappeared. ![]() Für die Inhalte dieses Feeds ist alleine der jeweilige Autor/Anbieter verantwortlich. Clipmarks | Vietnam ClipsWill there be a Dolchstoßlegende (stab-in-the-back myth) on the Iraq war?clipped by: Rasmusclippers remarks: Warnings about a new stab-in-the-back myth may seem premature or overheated at this moment in the Iraq War. Yet, if the history of the original version of this myth is any guide, the opposite is true. They are timely precisely because the Dolchstoßlegende was not a post-war concoction, but an explanation cunningly, even cynically, hatched by Rightists in Germany before the failure of the desperate, final "victory offensive" of 1918 became fully apparent. Although Hindenburgs dramatic testimony in November 1919 [...] popularized the myth in Germany, it caught fire precisely because the tinder had been laid to dry two years earlier. Clip Source: www.alternet.org Wilhelmine Germany in 1917 and 1918 Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg and his loyal second, General Erich Ludendorff, pushed Germany toward defeat and revolution in a relentless pursuit of victory in World War I. succeeded in deploying a stab-in-the-back myth, or Dolchstoßlegende, that shifted blame for defeat from themselves and Rightist politicians to Social Democrats and others allegedly responsible for losing the war by their failure to support the troops at home. The German Army knew it was militarily defeated in 1918. But this was an inconvenient truth for Hindenburg and the Right, so they crafted a new "truth": that the troops were "unvanquished in the field." self-censorship, coupled with wider institutional self-deception, effectively opened the door to exculpatory myths. Its a myth we ourselves are familiar with. ![]()

Clipmarks | Vietnam ClipsVietnam Memories Preserved by Indian Artistclipped by: ruralartclippers remarks: Intriguing modernization of a traditional honoring form, used to memorialize American Indian veterans of the Vietnam War. Now in the Smithsonian. Unfortunately, the site does not include a photo of the art work.....a pity. Sounds fascinating. Clip Source: www.smithsonianmag.com War and RemembranceAn Indian artists traditional tribute honors Native American soldiers who served in Vietnam In 2001, Her Many Horses, an artist trained both in traditional beadwork and in doll-making, began the creation of a commemorative tableau featuring miniature figures of Vietnam-era veterans and the tribal women who welcomed them home with ceremonies. Even today, these rituals are not much changed from the days when warriors returned from the Little Big Horn. It was around this time, in the mid-1960s, that Indian soldiers began returning from tours of duty in Vietnam to be met by honoring ceremonies. One man returned repeatedly to look at the dolls. He finally revealed that he was a Korean War veteran, allowing that to stand as sufficient reason for his intense contemplation of the work. Her Many Horses, a member of the Oglala Lakota Sioux of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, began attending tribal powwows as a boy. ![]()
